The Ole Miss softball team is two wins away from making more history.

After No. 13 National Seed Arizona took Sunday’s first game of the Tuscon Regional Final by a score of 10-1 the Rebels daunted offense woke up in the night cap for a 7-3 win.

With that Ole Miss punched its ticket to the program’s third Super Regional berth, heading to Fayetteville to play No. 4 National Seed Arkansas next weekend. Both teams will be looking for their first trip to the Women’s College World Series.

This is the first Super Regionals berth for the Rebels under head coach Jamie Trachsel and the first overall since 2019.

The Rebels were in the proverbial catbird seat entering Sunday having beaten Grand Canyon on Friday then Arizona on Saturday to advance to the regional finals. They needed to win only once while the Wildcats had to win twice.

Things got off to a rocky start as Ole Miss pitcher Miali Gauchino was hit for four runs off 18 pitches when Arizona jumped on her for the quick lead in the first game. The Wildcats did not look back from there, forcing the winner-take-all game.

Rebels starter Brianna Lopez got the ball in game two, working 5.2 innings and allowing three runs off nine hits and struck out three. She was helped by offense which had a similar hot start to Arizona’s with a home runs from Aliyah Binford and Mackenzie Pickens in the first inning for their own 4-0 lead. The Rebels added two more home runs on the night.

Gauchino was asked to come back in and close out the final 1.1 innings. She entered when the bases were loaded in the sixth and got the final out off the first pitch she threw to leave the traffic on the base paths and ending the last real threat Arizona had in the game.

Now Ole Miss turns its attention to Arkansas, which will serve as a rematch from the regular season. The Rebels hosted the Razorbacks in their SEC series opener, winning the series by taking the first two games. Arkansas salvaged things with a 20-3 win in the series finale.

A repeat of that next weekend will send Ole Miss to Oklahoma City.
