Ole Miss gets a bump in penultimate College Football Top 25 rankings
The biggest question entering Tuesday’s College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings for Ole Miss was would it take a hit after the departure of Lane Kiffin to LSU on Sunday.
Turns out the answer was a resounding no as the Rebels actually got a bump to No. 6 in the final rankings before the CFP bracket is set on Sunday. Kiffin opted to go to LSU and not stay with the Rebels to finish the best season in the program’s modern era.

This honor now goes to Pete Golding who was promoted from defensive coordinator to the schools’ 40th head football coach on Sunday in the wake of Kiffin leaving Oxford for Baton Rouge. Golding announced his staff on Tuesday hours before the CFP rankings came out and it included Charlie Weis, Jr. who will stay on to call plays for the duration of the team’s postseason run.
If Sunday’s final rankings mirror Tuesday’s then the Rebels will host a first round playoff game in two weeks on either December 19 or 20. They would play No. 11 Virginia with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals to play No. 3 Georgia in a New Year’s Six bowl game.
