SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Ole Miss men’s golf shot a collective 297 (+17) to sit tied for ninth in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Championships on Friday.

The Rebels teed off for the team’s first trip back to the national championship since 2017. Now they set their sights on getting above the Sunday cut line to continue to extend their postseason.

Following Sunday’s third round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on advancing teams to compete in Monday’s fourth and final round of stroke play.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start today,” said Ole Miss men’s golf head coach Chris Malloy. “Our second hole of the day we hit a couple balls into the desert, and that’s tough to rebound from out of the gates.

“But they did a great job of hanging in there. We really fought to get it back on track and then just made a couple more mistakes coming in that prevented us from climbing back up the leaderboard.”

Evan Brown led the way for Ole Miss at the end of day one.

Brown carded a round of 73 (+3) to open up his tournament. Sitting right behind Brown on the individual leaderboard are both Jackson Suber and Sarut Vongchaisit, who each tallied rounds of 74 (+4) on the day.

With a 76 (+6) in round one, Jack Gnam stands as the last counting score for the Rebels on day one, with Gnam shooting even par on his back nine of the round. Rounding out the rotation for the Rebels was redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks, who finished with a 78 (+8).

Vanderbilt currently leads the way on the team leaderboard with the Commodores opening their tournament with a two-over round in Scottsdale. The cut line for round four sits at 14-over, with the final spot belonging to defending national champion Pepperdine (294).

The Rebels return to action on Saturday for round two from Scottsdale with Ole Miss set to tee off of No. 1 beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT.

“There’s certainly a lot of golf left,” Malloy said. “We have two more days to get into the final 15 and then another day to get to match play. I certainly think we have our best golf ahead of us.”
