Ole Miss baseball trailed by a run after four innings Friday night against No. 20 South Carolina.

The Rebels had the Gamecocks right where they wanted them.

Tongue-in-cheek? A little, sure, but Ole Miss, through a month of games, has all but mastered the recipe for late-game comebacks/rallies/figure-it-out wins.

The Rebels boast one of the very best bullpens in college baseball. Their transfer-heavy offense is patient and powerful and rounding into a form not seen in and around Oxford since the title-winning summer of 2022.

Of course Connor Spencer (and a host of other Rebel relievers) held South Carolina right there.

Of course the Rebels scrapped together a pair of sixth-inning runs for a one-run lead they’d maintain in a bit of a roundabout fashion.

And of course they improved to 14-5 (1-0) on the season with a 5-4 win, their 12th in their last 13 games and eighth in a row.

“I’ve normally been a back-end reliever ever since I was at Northwest Mississippi Community College,” Spencer said. Spencer, a senior right-hander, went 1.2 innings for his fourth save of the year. None of the five Gamecocks he faced reached base. He struck out one.

“I was coming back from Tommy John (elbow surgery) and couldn’t really go the distance (as a starter). They (said), ‘Hey, let’s let you be the closer.’ I was throwing pretty hard, and I got recruited to my college I was at last year, Southeastern (Louisiana). I was a closer there for a while. Then I come here, and they (wanted me) in that back-end part.

“I know that my job is to go out there end just pound the zone. Tonight, we came out with a win.”
