Cal Hiring Oregon DC Tosh Lupoi as Head Coach

California has found their head coach. After firing Justin Wilcox on November 23, the Golden Bears are hiring Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi, as reported by On3’s Pete Nakos.

Lupoi played his college football in Berkeley from 2000 to 2005. Following his time as a player, he became the youngest full-time position coach in program history when he was hired to coach the Golden Bears defensive line at just 26 years old.

The Walnut Creek, California coached with Dan Lanning on Nick Saban‘s staff at Alabama and was hired as Oregon’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in January 2022.

During his time at Oregon he helped the Ducks field some of the top defenses in college football, while bringing in elite defensive linemen and outside linebackers like Derrick Harmon, Jordan Burch, Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuitoi. On Tuesday he was named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award for the second year in a row.

Lupoi is well-known as one of the bigger coaching names in college football and recruiting on the West Coast. His return to his Alma Mater to head up the Cal program will be his first head coaching position at just 44 years old and comes at a good time after the Golden Bears upset the No. 21 SMU Mustangs to cap off the regular season and ending any hopes the Mustangs had of advancing to the ACC championship game, which will feature the Virginia Cavaliers and Duke Blue Devils.

With Oregon’s defensive coordinator heading back to the Bay Area, Co-Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach Chris Hampton should be one of the top names to watch for Lanning as he searched for Lupoi’s replacement.
