Dan Lanning Provides Injury Update on 5-Star Oregon Safety Trey McNutt

Oregon signed one of the program’s best defensive back hauls in the 2025 recruiting class, but now 5-star freshman safety Trey McNutt, will miss time with an injury suffered in fall camp.
On Tuesday, head coach Dan Lanning provided an injury update on prized true freshman.
“You never want to see a player get injured. Trey broke his leg. Had surgery. He’s gonna be able to recover from that,” the head coach said. “It’s something we think he’ll be able come back from this season sooner than later. But I don’t want to put a timeline on that.”
McNutt was rated a 5-star recruit and was On3 | Rivals’ No. 2-ranked safety in the nation. He enrolled early in the winter and participated in spring practice with the Ducks, also recording a pass breakup to prevent a touchdown in the spring game.
Lanning is confident in how the touted freshman has handled himself since the injury occurred.
“But Trey’s handling that unbelievably. Kind of a freak deal,” Lanning said of the injury. “That being said, he’s working his a** off to get back. He’s staying engaged in the playbook. He’s preparing himself. He was having a really good fall camp. You always hate to see that happen, but it is part of football and I think Trey’s handled it really well.”

McNutt was expected to compete for some sort of a role as a true freshman, especially after Chris Hampton and Oregon lost their entire starting secondary from a season ago. He was one of three 5-star recruits to commit to the Ducks in the 2025 cycle, along with 5-star plus+ cornerback Na’eem Offord and 5-star plus+ wide receiver Dakorien Moore.
The competition at safety will continue, with players like Dillon Thieneman, Kingston Lopa, Aaron Flowers and Peyton Woodyard all in the mix.
