Dan Lanning and his staff have been busy getting Oregon in the running for some elite talent. The latest big news is coming from Alabaster (Ala.) with safety Tony Mitchell.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder is the No. 19 ranked player nationally in the On3 Consensus Rankings. He is the No. 2 ranked safety in the country.

On Monday he posted his top five schools, which included Oregon.

Alabama, Florida, Texas A&M and Georgia also made the cut.

Following the release of his top five, On3’s Hayes Fawcett had a few updates on his top five and a quick note about each. Here is what he said about the Ducks.

“I have a good relationship with Coach (Dan) Lanning,” Mitchell said. “It’s different on the west coast and I can be the change to help them become national championship contenders.”

A visit is also apparently in the works per On3’s Chad Simmons. You can read his full update from Mitchell right here.

Mitchell is one of the top-ranked high school prospects in the On3 NIL valuation. He is the No. 154 ranked athlete with a value of $32,000.

Here is the scouting summary on Mitchell.

Big defensive back with refined cover skills. Initially began his career as a cornerback, but has continued to add size. One of the bigger top safety prospects nationally at around 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. Has maintained and continued to develop his coverage skills and is among the more technically refined cover safeties in the 2023 cycle. Comfortable covering receivers in man situations. Uses his fluidity and length to make plays on the ball. Has also showed some striking power as a cover down defender with the willingness to deliver some hits across the middle of the field. Stars for one of the top high school programs and more talented prep defenses in the Southeast. Does not have verified athletic markers via camp settings or in track.
