Kentucky Hires Oregon OC Will Stein as Head Coach
Things move fast and now Dan Lanning will be busy for December. Moments ago it was reported Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein will be the next head coach at Kentucky. On3’s Pete Nakos and Chris Low confirmed the news.
The Wildcats moved on from longtime head coach Mark Stoops this weekend. Less than 48 hours later they found their man in Oregon. Will Stein was a top name immediately when the job opened. He remained at the top of the list in the very narrow search.
Kentucky finished the season at 5-7 overall in the SEC. They only won two conference games this season.
Will Stein meanwhile helped lead Oregon to an 11-1 season as the play-caller for the Ducks offense.

The 36 year old native of Kentucky has seen his stock rise as much as anyone the past few seasons. As recent as 2019 he was a coach at Lake Travis high school in Austin, Texas. He has served as Oregon’s OC from 2023-2025.
It is unclear what the plan is for Stein moving forward with Oregon. The Ducks will prepare for what is expected to be a playoff game, likely hosting in the first round at Oregon. Kentucky is not bowl eligible so the season is over.
Drew Mehringer is listed as co-offensive coordinator officially on the Oregon coaching roster. Mehringer has called plays for Oregon previously when Kenny Dillingham left for ASU.
We will update an OC hot board following this news.
