Report: Oregon expected to hire Tosh Lupoi as defensive coordinator

Dan Lanning has reportedly added another marquee name to his coaching staff.
Matt Zenitz of On3 reported Monday morning that Tosh Lupoi, who currently serves as the defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, is expected to become Oregon’s defensive coordinator at the conclusion of the NFL season.
Reports of Lanning targeting Lupoi for his staff emerged earlier this month, and now it sounds as though Oregon has officially landed the highly-regarded coach.
It was reported elsewhere that Florida was also targeting Lupoi. But he will instead reunite with Lanning after the two spent the 2015 season together on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff.
Lupoi, 40, is in his first season as Jacksonville’s defensive line coach. Prior to that, he was the DL coach and run game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 and the DL coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2019.
Prior to his stint in the NFL, he was the defensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide during the 2017 and 2018 seasons and was at the helm of a national championship-winning defense his first year in that role. He also served as a defensive analyst for Alabama from 2014-15 and was its outside linebackers coach in 2016.

Lupoi is a Walnut Creek, Calif., native, and started his college coaching career as Cal’s defensive line coach. He held that role from 2008-11 before taking the same position at Washington from 2012-13.
In his first week on the job, Lanning added Matt Powledge as his co-defensive coordinator and Kenny Dillingham as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported last week that Oregon is set to hire Marshall Malchow as its chief of staff for football. Malchow is currently an associate athletic director at Texas A&M.
