Trav's Mailbag: Answering ScoopDuck's Top Questions

Hey All,

Been a busy week so I apologize for the short edition this week. Going to be an exciting next 2 to 3 days in Eugene and we should see lots of info come out over the next week! Stay tuned!

If we land Lebbeus Overton is that the biggest recruiting win ever? He was #2 overall 2023 player until his reclassification. I figure that’s bigger than KT to pull him from the south.

It would certainly be up there. DAT is still probably #1 IMO, but it would be a discussion for sure. We’ll see what comes of this weekend but I can’t find myself getting too excited for this one. I wouldn’t put our chances above 25%.

Any word on how Don Johnson is doing?

It’s not great. Good vibes appreciated.

I heard Marshall Malchow on Jhop’s podcast last month. He said he left a great job at aTm specifically to work with Coach Lanning. It sounded like a true loyalty situation for him to leave a job that might have been better. Were there other coaches who left their jobs primarily out of loyalty to CDL? I realize most received raises to move and some were moving on from previously held, temporary jobs(Klemm, for instance.)

I wouldn’t describe it as much as loyalty versus connections. All coaches like to hire people that they have experience with, especially coaches who plan to really build a family-oriented staff like Lanning. Dilly was obviously in this camp, and generally speaking, Lanning held some level of relationship with most of the on and off-field staff.

The same talking points/buzz coming out of Nico’s visit to Oregon are now coming from Nico’s visit to Tennessee… how are you feeling about our chances in the Nico sweepstakes, especially given the chatter in the local 7v7 scene?

I feel the chatter but remain confident as long as he visits again this spring. It is definitely a tad uneasy, but given what is being planned for the spring game, I’m good as long as he’s there.

Starting with the 2023 class and head-to-head recruiting battles, who will win more Oregon or USC and why?

I think each will get ours. Until our offense is in place and proves to be potent, HTH battles with Riley will be a challenge for QB, RB, and WR. However, as with Nico/Malachi this year, there’s plenty to go around. I maintain that until they start recruiting the lines, I’m not overly concerned about battling them at a high level. Ultimately, having a powerhouse in the south, that we don’t even play every year, benefits us as much as it hurts us.
