Penn State Gearing up for "Competitive" Blue-White Game | Practice Recap

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team closes out spring practice this weekend with the annual Blue-White Game at Beaver Stadium. Before that, they opened practice to the media for one final time. Join the BWI Live show today as we discuss what we saw and heard at the final open Tuesday practice of the spring season.

Senior insiders Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer discuss their practice observations from Tuesday night and other topics from James Franklin’s press conference afterward.

Penn State head coach James Franklin discusses Blue-White Game

Specifically, we’ll dive into Franklin’s comments that he wants to make the Blue-White Game as competitive as possible for his Penn State team. In years past, coaches would split the group by the depth chart, with the third and fourth string on the White team and starters on the Blue squad. We’ll discuss how that might play out this upcoming weekend. Will we see Drew Allar square off against Beau Pribula in the two-hour scrimmage?

We delve into the significant injury to Jaxon Smolik and its potential game-changing impact on the upcoming weekend’s game.

Practice observations from Tuesday night

Of course, we were able to see practice on Tuesday, and for the first time this year, the offensive line gave us a sense of what the current depth chart looks like. On today’s show, we discuss the notable aspects of that group. Specifically, we talk about Cooper Cousins, his position flexibility, and the best-case scenarios for the offensive line this year. Franklin discussed Cousins’ spring so far after practice.

“His transition has been like a lot of guys in terms of he probably came in further than ahead than most guys. And kind of skyrocketed up and I think was getting a lot of attention and a lot of people noticing him,” Franklin said.

“Then as the playbook started to kind of build up on him and the blitzes and the different fronts and games started and you know, like, like most of these guys, they kind of have a lull that they got to work through, and now he’s starting to kind of pick it back up again.”

However, the potentially significant news deals with Penn State receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith. We discuss the situation we observed with Lambert-Smith yesterday momentarily on today’s show. For more, check out the Blue White Illustrated message board.

BWI Mailbag

Finally, your questions power the final segment. We dive into the BWI Mailbag to discuss the team’s wide receiver fit in Andy Kotelnicki’s offense, where Alex Birchmeier fits into the picture for the offensive interior and the nature of the team’s nickel cornerback role.
