Myles Dread is running it back with the Penn State men’s basketball program.

Announcing his decision via social media Tuesday afternoon, the Nittany Lion senior committed to coming back to Penn State to take advantage of his bonus year of eligibility. He played extensively during his four seasons at Penn State and is set to do it one more time.

Myles Dread’s full message to Penn State fans

Dear Penn State,

“These last four years have been:nothing but everything a kid from Detroit, Michigan could ever ask for. To the fans, the supporters, Legion of Blue, and the staff, I appreciate that through all the up and downs your trust and faith in Penn State Basketball has never waivered.

“Since July 10, 20169-I’ve been nothing but committed to Penn State and the State College community. You guys have given me more love and motivation than I could ever ask for. I made a choice to attend Penn State with the Idea of taking a team that hadn’t been to the NCAA Tournament in years fo the Big Dance. This past season I was not fully healthy, and under the guidance and supervision of the medical staff, I was able to play with a severely torn labrum in my shooting shoulder. It was important to me to persevere for my teammates, for my coaching staff, and for Penn State. Immediately after the season, I underwent surgery to repair my shoulder and get as healthy as possible, and now I start my journey to get in the best shape of my life.

“With that being said, I will be returning to Penn State to utilize my extra year of eligibility. I look forward to leading this team and giving everything I have as we set out to accomplish our goals.”

What’s next for Myles Dread?

Right now, rehabilitation is in store for Dread as he works toward restoring his full health.

As indicated in his message to fans announcing his return to Penn State, Dread spent the entirety of the 2021-22 season wearing a brace on his right shoulder. Revealing that injury to be that of a severely torn labrum, Dread continued his pace as one of the program’s most prolific 3-point shooters.

His season highlight came in a dramatic, double-OT win over Iowa in January, 90-86, in which his late 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime forced a second. But on the whole, he served in a variety of roles in Micah Shrewsberry’s first season with the program.

Beginning the year as a starter, Dread’s role proved to shift from game-to-game, ultimately making 20 starts and playing in all 31 games for the Nittany Lions. He averaged 6.2 points per game in 27.0 minutes, finishing second on the team in 3-point makes with 55. He’ll return alongside the team leader, Seth Lundy, who hit 64 on the year.
