Penn State head coach Mike Rhoades and the Nittany Lion basketball program faced an atypical situation this week. Left with a sour taste in their mouths following a 75-70 loss at Minnesota in which they’d squandered a 23-point lead, the program reconvened for a week on campus while the rest of the student body vacated for spring break.

A rare late-season bye, with no midweek game scheduled, the Nittany Lions got healthy and prepared for a Sunday evening tilt with Maryland to close out the Big Ten slate.

“Having the week here with the guys on spring break, it’s quiet around here. We just had a good week so far. We got a couple days off where we got some rest and took care of bodies and a couple guys fighting some illness,” said Rhoades this week. “Just back at it now preparing for the last home game, senior day on Sunday night. And then ready to get into to the conference tournament next week.

“It’s that time of the year right now we just got to really tighten up and and guys are still excited to play. I’m excited to see what we got and go from there.”

Senior Day report

Leo O’BoyleRayQuawndis Mitchell, and Qudus Wahab have all exhausted their eligibility. Senior walk-ons Dan Conlan and Andy Christos, plus senior guard Ace Baldwin and senior forward Puff Johnson, have not.

All were featured as being recognized for Senior Day on Sunday by the program. But, when asked whether or not Baldwin and Johnson will pursue additional seasons next year, Rhoades offered little in the way of concrete information.

“Anytime you could stay older, that always helps, no matter what it is, and on any team,” said Rhoades. “We have some discussion. But the focus is more on finishing strong here and going into the conference tournament.

“We’ll have those discussions when they need to be had, for sure. I think our focus is on the team. The focus is on right now. We’ve had some great moments to get everyone excited, let’s see if we can have a couple more of them.”
