From the onset, former Penn State hoops legend Calvin Booth made clear the logic behind his son’s commitment to the Nittany Lions. Carey Booth, an On3 Top 100 prospect in the Class of 2023, wasn’t following his father’s footsteps at the collegiate level.

Rather, putting his faith in the coaching acumen shown by Micah Shrewsberry, the younger Booth saw a plan worth following.

“During a lot of the process, I felt like it kind of convoluted things that I went to Penn State, because it was more about Coach Shrewsberry’s aptitude,” Calvin Booth said upon his son’s commitment last summer. “(It was more about) his plan for Carey and the upside he has as a coach, and the upside the program has because he’s running it. Coach Shrewsberry, whatever school he was at, Carey probably in all likelihood would have followed where he’s at.”

Tuesday afternoon, that sentiment bore out again.

Announcing his decision to On3’s Joe Tipton, Booth has made formal that he will follow Shrewsberry to Notre Dame. The commitment marks the second from Penn State’s former three-man Class of 2023 to head to South Bend, Ind., joining Braeden Shrewsberry.

Next steps for Penn State

Booth requested a release from his Penn State letter of intent on March 23, one day after Shrewsberry’s decision to take the head job with the Fighting Irish. Though Mike Rhoades was introduced as the Nittany Lions’ next leader eight days later, the opportunity to retain Booth’s commitment never materialized.

“I chose to follow coach Shrews to Notre Dame because I feel like its a unique opportunity to grow under one of the best minds in basketball and in one of the NCAA’s toughest conferences,” Booth told Tipton. “With these two things in mind, it made it a pretty easy decision to follow him.”

Penn State’s third commitment from the Class of 2023, Logan Imes, is also expected to commit to play for Notre Dame.

Rhoades and the Nittany Lions, meanwhile, have worked to build back their roster ahead of the 2023-24 season. To date, that has taken shape as five incoming transfers through the portal, as well as the retention of three members of Penn State’s true freshman class.
