Penn State basketball brought in first signing class for new head coach Mike Rhoades with a three-man haul in November. The Nittany Lions are looking to build on that momentum with the Class of 2025.

RJ Greer, a three-star shooting guard out of Dayton, Ohio, could be among the pieces to help Penn State do so.

Whittling down his choices from 10 offers, Greer announced on Thursday afternoon via On3’s Joe Tipton that Penn State is among his finalists. The other programs grabbing his attention are Cincinnati and N.C. State, along with interest in a potential NBL route.

“I’ve known the coaches for a while now since they were at VCU coaching against my dad, so there’s been a relationship there,” Greer told Tipton. “They’ve made me feel wanted, calling everyday and always in touch. I’m excited to visit soon.”

Greer has yet to visit the Nittany Lions, but indicated an interest in doing so moving forward.

Scouting RJ Greer

Rising as high as No. 80 in the Class of 2025 On3 Industry Ranking with four-star status last spring, Greer has fallen slightly to No. 130 overall with a three-star standing this winter. He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 170 pounds and plays at Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, near Dayton.

A strong scorer off the dribble, Greer can create his own shot at every level of the hardwood. And, as he begins to focus in on his top options for continuing his playing career, he identified some of the sticking points that stand out as priorities for his future home.

“I’m going to be looking for a program, a school that makes me feel at home,” Greer told On3’s Jamie Shaw last spring. “Somewhere I know they actually want me and somewhere I can see my game fitting in with their plan for me. I like to look at players who went to each program and how they left there. Not only how they played at the school but how they got better.

“Play style will matter, for sure. But I don’t know how to say how it will matter. So I’m comfortable on the ball and off the ball, so I would have to just see how it looks at each place and their plan for me and go from there. I’ll know.”

Penn State among three other “finalist” options

Here is a look at what else Greer had to say about his other potential landing spots.

Cincinnati: “They were the first school to really recruit me hard. The relationship I have with the coaches is second to none and they’ve really shown interest in me and building a relationship with my family.”

NC State: “The coaches have been recruiting me hard recently after I played in the NBA academy and since then it’s been great. My visit there was amazing and my mom loved it as well. They’re a great program.”

NBL: “Ever since I got my Australian passport this route has gotten more realistic. After the NBA Academy I got in touch with a lot of people from Australia who are big parts of the NBL and I have a Zoom with a couple of them in the next coming days.”
