Penn State offensive lineman Anthony Whigan has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Whigan, who transferred to the Lions from Lackawanna College, is a graduate transfer. Therefore, he has one year of eligibility remaining.

“These past 3 years have been some of the most memorable years of my life,” Whigan wrote in a statement posted to social media. “Being able to have made lifelong friendships/connections and earn a degree from such a prestigious school like Penn State, I am forever grateful.

“I would like to thank the coaches, my teammates and the awesome fans here at Penn State. I’m blessed to have the support of you guys as a Nittany Lion. With that being said I have decided to enter my name in the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer with 1 year of eligibility remaining.”

Whigan was part of Penn State’s battle for a starting lineup spot in 2021. However, he quickly lost the starting guard job to Harvard transfer Eric Wilson. Ultmately, Whigan led the way in the opener against the Badgers but Wilson left the contest as the presumed starter moving forward.

Whigan’s decision to leave Penn State is not a surprise

All told, Whigan made an expected decision. He was not listed on the latest Penn State roster earlier this month. He joins receiver Daniel George in looking for a new home since the 2021 season ended. Both have college football eligibility remaining.

BWI did not list Whigan on its recently-updated scholarship chart. The Lexington Park, Md., native played in all nine games of the shortened 2020 season, mostly on special teams. He came to Penn State after transferring in from Lackawanna College before the 2019 season. However, he played in just two games that year.

Penn State continues to work to retool its offensive line. The Lions are pushing hard for Class of 2022 offensive lineman Vega Ioane ahead of the traditional signing period. They also have offered transfer portal lineman Hunter Nourzad and Tyler Steen.

The Lions open the 2022 season next September at Purdue.
