What led to the schism between Penn State football and KeAndre Lambert-Smith

Penn State will lose a receiver to the NCAA transfer portal once the spring window opens on April 16. On3’s Pete Nakos reports that senior KeAndre Lambert-Smith is expected to look for a new college home starting next week. The idea of him moving on following the 2023 season was an oft-discussed one back in January. But, he returned for winter workouts and most of spring practice, which concludes with Saturday’s Blue-White game.

“I think he’s had a good spring,” Lions coach James Franklin said in early April. “He’s shown some real flashes this spring. And I’m seeing them on a more consistent basis. I think Coach [Andy Kotelnicki]’s done a really good job with him as well. They seem to have a really good relationship. I think [receivers coach] Marques [Hagans] has done a really good job of developing relationships with the whole room. We need him to have a big year, and I’m seeing more consistency in the special plays and production.”

The Norfolk, Va., native now seems destined to try and have that big year elsewhere. Penn State had hoped he would morph into its No. 1 receiver at this time a year ago. But, after a solid start, he faded last fall. After catching at least six passes in six of the team’s first nine games, he caught a total of two over the final four contests to ultimately finish the year with 53 receptions for 673 yards and four touchdowns. Over four seasons with the Lions, Lambert-Smith caught 126 passes for 1,721 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Track Penn State transfer portal activity

The NCAA transfer portal database is private. But Blue-White Illustrated and the On3 Network have you covered from start to finish when it comes to tracking Penn State player movement.

Our well-established network of reporters and contacts across college athletics keeps you up to speed in several ways. We have articles written about players as they enter and exit the transfer portal or find their new destination, a dedicated transfer portal Twitter accountand the On3 Transfer Portal wire.

The transfer portal wire provides a real-time feed of player activity, including basic player profile information, transfer portal ranking, and original On3 Consensus recruiting ranking, as well as NIL valuation (name, image, and likeness).

While the transfer portal officially opens for business on Dec. 4 for undergraduate players, grad transfers can enter it at any time. This specific transfer portal window runs through Jan. 2, 2024. It is important to note that a player does not need to make his decision by the deadline. Undergrads do, however, have to declare their intent to enter the portal by then. When they pick their next school or decide to return to their current one after that is up to them. A second transfer portal window will run April 15-30.
