Penn State running back Trey Potts makes 2024 decision
The Peach Bowl last Saturday was Trey Potts’ last time in a Penn State uniform, and the 23-year old Minnesota transfer has no regrets.
“I got to live out a dream,” Potts said following the Nittany Lions’ loss to Ole Miss. “I grew up idolizing Penn State players, I was always a fan. So me coming here, making great relationships here and getting to play at the highest level of football, I just learned a lot. I set myself up for the future and for success, and learned how to work and carry yourself.
“I’m truly grateful for this opportunity. I grew up 45 minutes down the road and I’ve just loved the last couple of months. It’s been a joy.”
Potts announced on Thursday evening that he’ll forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Williamsport native transferred to Penn State last spring and assumed the No. 3 role in the Nittany Lions backfield behind Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton. He finished the year with 162 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. He added four catches for 57 yards and a score as a receiver.
In a win over Northwestern in late September, he responded in an expanded role with Allen suffering an injury in the first half in Evanston. Potts scored on the ground and was on the other end of a 30-yard toss from Beau Pribula. He also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Warren a few weeks earlier against Illinois.
Potts arrived last year with a degree from Minnesota in hand after being a three-time Academic All-Big Ten with the Gophers. He has plans to continue playing football after his college career is over.
“I really enjoyed this year so much,” he said over the weekend. “In the back of my head I could definitely come back. Next year the conference expands, our team is going to get better than it is right now. So that’s always a thought in my mind.
“I’m definitely getting older. I’ve had a long college career and I have a good chance to play at the next level. So it’s a battle in my head to make that decision.”
