Penn State has brought back one of its own in an offseason staff move. As BWI indicated to its readers prior to the Rose Bowl, James Franklin was in the process of bringing former Tulsa wide receivers coach Calvin Lowry back to Happy Valley as an offensive analyst. The move is official as of this week. Lowry is now listed in the Penn State athletics directory as an Offensive Analyst & Analytics Coordinator.

Lowry played for the Nittany Lions from 2001-2005 as a safety and punt returner. He was a first-team All-Big Ten safety for Penn State in 2005 after racking up 79 tackles and four interceptions. He had nine career interceptions for the Nittany Lions and started as a true freshman for Joe Paterno in 2002. Lowry earned his bachelor’s degree in Crime, Law and Justice from Penn State in 2007. He earned his Master’s in educational leadership from the school in 2020. Born in Fort Hood, Texas, Lowry moved to Fayetteville, N.C. at a young age and was a standout at Douglas Byrd High School.

He was a fourth-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2006 and played in 43 games as a pro. Lowry had 57 tackles and two interceptions in the 2007 season.

Lowry got into coaching after Penn State, NFL careers

Lowry’s first collegiate coaching stop was at Baylor. There he spent two years as an assistant director of operations and one as a graduate assistant. His next eight years were spent at Tulsa, starting in 2015. His most recent title for the Golden Hurricane was as the team’s Co-Passing Game Coordinator, Receivers & Special Teams Coach. In 2015, Tulsa wide receiver Keyarris Garrett led the nation with 1,588 yards and averaged 122.2 yards per game. Lowry coached Biletnikoff semifinalist Keylon Stokes in 2022.

Following the 2022 season, Tulsa parted ways with head coach Phillip Montgomery. Lowry was not retained by new head coach Kevin Wilson in the transition. Penn State had an analyst spot open on its staff after Charlie Frye accepted the offensive coordinator role at Florida Atlantic last month.

Lowry is set to reunite with former defensive back-mate Alan Zemaitis in Happy Valley. The two were All-Big Ten picks as part of a Big Ten Championship team that won the 2006 Orange Bowl and were selected 20 spots apart from each other in the 2006 NFL Draft. Zemaitis returned to Penn State as a Recruiting Coordinator for Personnel in March 2021 and he’s made his mark as one of the Nittany Lions’ top recruiters on staff
