Penn State put one of the final pieces to the puzzle in place Wednesday everning when former Minnesota running back Treyson Potts committed to the program out of the transfer portal. The veteran running back returns to Pennsylvania to play for his childhood team and sat down with Sean Fitz to discuss why he chose Penn State.

Fitz and host Thomas Frank Carr break down the situation with Potts in today’s video recap of the decision. Check out the full video and subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don’t miss breaking new content.

Penn State and Potts timeline

Potts originally went into the transfer portal on March 13 and signed with Penn State less than a month later. What went into this timeline? It’s not as simple as one timeline, says Fitz,

“Well, there are a couple of timelines at play here because, first off, you have to look at Penn State’s timeline running back a secondary need in the first portal window. December, January, because you had to focus on bringing in or wide receiver to wide receivers as they did. Defensive tackle is obviously a huge need. This [running back] was one of the ones that was a luxury need to be honest,” Fitz said.

But getting Potts on the roster is a rare fit. With the talent already ahead of whomever the Nittany Lions tried to find the portal, it would be a tough sell. Luckily for assisant coach Ja’Juan Seider, he found Potts,

“The more and more you think about it, the more it had to be a special type of kid. As big as we just kind of alluded to. It had to be a kid that could come in and accept his role. Basically, you’re not coming in to start because Nick Singleton’s a damn good runner; Kaytron Allen the same.”

What Potts can do for running back room

However, getting just any body to play running back isn’t good enough. That player still needs to provide value to the Penn State program. T-Frank thinks Potts can find that role in the offense.

“But a valuable piece of the puzzle is absolutely what I think you find here in Trey Potts. Per attempt, he’s doing a good job of breaking tackles. [His] yards per attempt is quality. I’m interested looking at him; he’s, as you mentioned, physical. I think it’s generous that he’s 5-11 on the Minnesota roster but a squatty physical running back with good vision and leg drive.”

Penn State is still looking for more players after the spring season concludes. The obvious position left to fill defensive tackle. Lock in with Blue White Illustrated by signing up for premium content.
