The transfer portal has been open for a week, and the Penn State Nittany Lions finally have their first portal addition. Shorter University tackle Alan Herron committed to the Nittany Lions on Monday afternoon. The commitment comes after his official visit the previous weekend, where he spent time getting to know the coaching staff.

Recruiting and Penn State Football insider Sean Fitz discusses what he knows about how the weekend went and what the team is getting in Herron. The 6-5 tackle took an official visit to Texas Tech but never made it to his Clemson visit, as he committed to the Nittany Lions first. Herron had interest from other Power Five schools, including Miami and Auburn.

Penn State adds portal tackle to young lineup

With All-American left tackle Olu Fashanu likely headed to the NFL Draft, Penn State is short on experience. Right tackle Caedan Wallace has one bonus year of eligibility left but may also declare for the Draft. If he does, it will leave a lean list of playing experience on the edge of the pocket.

Junior tackle Drew Shelton will likely take one of those jobs next fall but beyond him, the team has a pair of redshirt freshmen in J’ven Williams and Chimdy Ohno. Williams played in three games this fall, while Onoh played in two. The team could also move left guard JB Nelson outside if they wanted to add another player with experience to the mix.

The team also has a highly-acclaimed freshman class arriving with top 150 players Garrett Sexton and Cooper Cousins, along with 6-8 tackle Eagan Boyer, all of whom have the length and skill to play tackle. However, the team could still pursue talent in the portal that has experience if they find the right piece.
