Date for SMU Basketball vs. LSU in New Orleans revealed

SMU Basketball coach Andy Enfield sat down with On The Pony Express on Wednesday and revealed the date of the Mustangs heading to New Orleans to face Matt McMahon’s LSU Basketball team. The ACC-SEC matchup is set for Dec. 13 in the Smoothie King Center, but a time is still to be determined.
Enfield’s program has games against Butler, Mississippi State and more as well on the non-conference schedule, which will be fully revealed later this summer.
“That’s a pretty challenging schedule. Of course, we go into the ACC starting in January,” Enfield said in an interview. “We did that on purpose. We wanted to try to load up with some challenging games to give our guys a chance to get some quality wins early on.”
Last season, SMU won its fifth straight game by beating LSU 74-64 on December 14 in the Compete 4 Cause Classic at the Comerica Center. This time, the Mustangs enter following a strong debut campaign in the ACC while McMahon’s team went 14-18, finishing 3-15 in SEC play.

Enfield’s Mustangs finished 24-11, going 13-7 in ACC play, good enough to finish tied for 4th in the league. Now with a year under his belt in Dallas, Enfield is expecting big things once again.
“We expect to win and compete, just like we did last year,” Enfield said. “That was our message to our returning guys last year, but also the 10 new players we have on the team. I know everybody’s new, staff new, players are new, but we want to compete. We want to compete with the top teams in our league, and we did that last year. We feel like we have enough talent. The three transfers we brought in, Corey Washington, Jaron Pierre Jr., and Sam Walters are all experienced guys, three returning starters that helped us win a lot of games last year, and then our freshmen.
“So this group is talented enough to win games. It’s going to be a matter of how they gel together. Can they share the basketball like we did last year? Can they elevate our defensive presence and be one of the top two or three teams in our league defensively? A lot to be determined. That’s why we play the games.”
