In a massive recruiting win for SMU, four-star Flower Mound (Tex.) OL Drew Evers has committed to SMU, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett on Thursday. The 6-4, 285-pounder picked the Mustangs over Ohio State, LSU, Texas A&M and others.

“214…I’m staying home. Let’s work #PonyUp,” he told Fawcett.

On3 ranks Evers the highest out of any recruiting service, ranking him as the No. 110 overall prospect in the country, No. 7 interior offensive lineman and No. 16 prospect in Texas.

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he’s the No. 222 overall prospect in the country, No. 16 interior offensive lineman in America and No. 30 prospect in Texas.

Evers has visited SMU numerous times over the years and he spent time with plenty of staffers on Rhett Lashlee’s staff on his official visit. The local prospect took his official visit all the way back on May 2.

“This visit was basically just about reassuring what I already knew,” Evers said. “I’ve been around Coach Foster, Coach Justice, Coach Lashlee for a long, long time, you know? I’ve had a great relationship with them, and basically all this visit was just spending time with them, growing that relationship. I know where I stand with them, I know it’s great. I was watching film with Coach Reggie (Bain) just a couple seconds ago, and Coach (D’Eriq).”

Sitting down with the staff, including offensive line coach Garin Justice, Evers sees a path to playing time and it can be anywhere on the offensive line.

“They see me as like that guy who could play all five positions regardless of where it is and they see me as like a guy who come in and contribute early and they need me to contribute early,” he said. “They also need me to contribute early and in the recruitment of other guys, but they want to get me on board first.”
