ESPN has SMU predicted for another historic season, if the outlet’s FPI projects the schedule for the Mustangs correctly. If the games end up the way the ESPN Matchup Predictor has them predicted, Rhett Lashlee’s squad will be 11-1 come December.

That’d very likely put the Mustangs in Charlotte for a rematch of the 2024 ACC Championship game against Clemson. The classic went the Tigers’ way on a buzzer-beating field goal, but both teams went to the College Football Playoff. An 11-1 team in the conference championship game would likely get into the College Football Playoff.

Clemson was picked to win the ACC once again in this year’s preseason poll while Miami checked in at No. 2 with seven first-place by the panel of voters. The Mustangs followed behind as the No. 3 team in the preseason media poll and got two first-place votes.

ESPN has the Mustangs winning big in 2025. Rhett Lashlee just hopes the team plays hard and reaches its potential.

“Look, we feel like we have something to prove, but because we feel like this team has a lot of potential. If we don’t reach that potential then we didn’t prove that we are who we want to be or think we are. That’s the urgency. That’s the edge we need to have as a team. We’re not avenging anything,” Lashlee said. “Crap, we went to the playoffs. Like all that stuff’s great. We need to show that this team can maximize its potential and what that end result is, I don’t know. But I feel like if we do, we’re gonna be in November playing in meaningful games. And if we don’t, we probably won’t be.

“That’s really all that I worry about. But I mean, I love the sayings. TV announcers love it. Our players love it. You love it. When y’all figure out what it is, let me look that up.”
