The Denver Broncos and star wide receiver Courtland Sutton have agreed to a deal hours after head coach Sean Payton told the media on Monday that the two sides were closing in on a contract extension. The former SMU wideout was not participating in team drills the past two practice.

A couple hours later, it was reported by Jordan Schultz that Sutton agreed to a 4-year, $92 million contract extension.

Schultz reported Monday around lunch that the belief was a deal should get done “sooner than later,” per multiple sources. Sutton’s reps were in Denver working on it with Broncos officials, he said. He’s been doing walk-thru work and helping with the Jugs Machine.

Sure enough, the 6-4 wideout got paid in a big way.

Sutton had a massive impact on Denver in 2024, finishing with a career-best 81 receptions as rookie quarterback Bo Nix lead the Broncos to the playoffs. His 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdowns were the second-highest season totals of his seven-year career.

“I think Courtland, he’s a resource for the team from a leadership perspective,” Payton said to ESPN. “There’s a work ethic, and a toughness and a consistency day-to-day … (he) is such a positive role model and leader for these guys.”

Courtland Sutton echoed Payton’s comments that he’s been leading. It seems like just a matter of time before he’s locked into that role long-term with the team.

“I think the best teams that perform the best on the field are the teams that are the most tight-knit off the field,” Sutton said. “When you have a group of guys that care about each other beyond just football and when you have those relationships with guys … those are the teams that have the most success. You’re playing for more than just, ‘this is my teammate.'”

Courtland Sutton is entering the final season of a 4-year, $60.8 million contract signed in 2021. The former SMU product was a 2nd round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

“You can tell every year [Sutton is] looking to get better and I feel like we haven’t even seen the best of him yet, even though he’s been so great,” cornerback Pat Surtain II said last week of Sutton.
