SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings was helped off the field with an injury with 12:41 to go in the 3rd quarter against TCU. Jennings was dinged up with an ankle injury toward the end of the Baylor game.

Rhett Lashlee reported to ESPN’s broadcast crew that his ankle was at 80-85 percent going into the final Battle for the Iron Skillet. Lashlee said after the game that it was indeed the same ankle for the SMU quarterback that was injured vs. Baylor.

“I think Kevin played really well. I mean, both those interceptions are late and desperate mode. You’re just having to heave it up,” Lashlee said. “I thought Kevin played really, really well. He rolled the same ankle that has been bothering him and just showed his toughness, came right back in and led us on two touchdown drives to take the lead. Kevin’s a winner, he’s a stud.”

Jennings didn’t miss a drive though as he went back out on the next drive. When he exited with that injury, Jennings was 12-of-19 for 150 yards and a touchdown.

He finished 34-of-38 for 290 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions as the Mustangs fell to TCU, 35-24.

ESPN’s Taylor Davis said Jennings gave trainers and coaches “two thumbs up” when he exited the training tent after getting evaluated.

True freshman Ty Hawkins is the backup quarterback for SMU and has seen action against East Texas A&M and Missouri State.
