SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings is trending toward being available for the Mustangs on Saturday at Missouri State. While Jennings got dinged up late in the loss to Baylor last week, head coach Rhett Lashlee is expecting him to play.

“Kevin, he kind of banged his ankle late. X-rays, everything was negative,” Lashlee said Tuesday. “He’s a little limited today, but I mean, all signs point to it’s nothing serious and we expect him to be ready to go Saturday.”

Jennings was made available to the media as well, another good sign for his chances to play. The Mustangs couldn’t get past Baylor, losing a 14-point lead in the 4th quarter to fall to 1-1.

Jennings was 17-for-23 for 296 yards and three touchdowns with an interception. He got hurt on the last offensive drive of the game on a keeper, part of his 14 carries for 16 yards on the day.

“It’s feeling better than what it did after the game,” Jennings said Tuesday. “Went out there to practice today, was kind of limited on reps, but got the reps in that I needed and all of that. Was feeling way much better than what it was previously.”

On Monday, SMU got back out with a walk-thru and had a good practice, according to Jennings. He wasn’t a full participant, but the Mustangs are being smart with their signal caller.

“I feel like we responded really well,” Jennings said. “Yesterday with walk-thru, came out intentional with every single thing we did. Today, we came out at practice with an emphasis to get better, the mistakes we made against Baylor, I think we responded really well. The team is very determined to become better and do the little things better.

“Week 2 we came out, we fought hard, we played a really good game. It’s just about finishing. I think that’s what we need to see throughout the season Week 3, Week 4, Week 5 … Just us being able to finish in key situations and put the game away.”

Lashlee knows this week is a game SMU has to be ready to roll for to get the bad taste of the blown lead against the Bears gone. At 2:30 p.m. CT, he’ll start to have an idea if that’s happening for his team.

“It’s gonna be how we handle this. Do we use this? Do we let it be a catalyst for us as a team, as individuals? It’s hurtful,” Lashlee said. “We’re moving on. We got a tough week to go on the road for the first time against Missouri State. We need to go play well. We need to play ticked off. We need to get a win, and heal up that wound of last week. Get a scar that will remind us in the future when in those situations, hopefully we’ll respond better.”
