SMU advances to 1-0 on the season and will look to right numerous wrongs ahead of Baylor next week. There were plenty of positives and negatives from tonight’s game, but the bottom line is SMU is 1-0.

Jennings to Cooper for six

Blown coverage by ETAMU allowed Jalen Cooper to sneak down the sideline wide open for a 38-yard touchdown. The true freshman has caught five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs extend their lead, 42-3 with 9:34 to play in the fourth quarter

Fireworks to start the fourth

Kevin Jennings jogs into the end zone from seven yards out for the touchdown. The junior QB made the right decision on a read option and punished the Lions. SMU leads 35-3 at the start of the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd quarter: SMU 28 – East Texas A&M 3

The SMU defense continues to make plays when ETAMU enters the red zone, scoring a pick-six and forcing a fumble. The SMU offense has not fully hit its stride yet. Mustangs in control with 15 minutes to go.

Ahmaad Moses with a 95-yard pick six

Moses gave SMU its second pick-six of the game. East Texas A&M drove down inside the SMU 10-yard line to start the second half. The Lions were threatening to cut into the SMU lead until the senior safety cut off the route and took the interception 95 yards for the score. The Mustangs now hold a 28-3 lead with 9:32 left in the third quarter.

HALFTIME: SMU 21 – ETAMU 3

For SMU, the first half was filled with ups and downs. The Mustangs lost Alex Kilgore and Jordan Hudson to injury and played a somewhat sloppy half. That said, Jennings made some impressive throws and the running game showed glimpses of what it could be. Lots it improve on in the second half.

Coach Lashlee was not pleased with his teams performance in the first half.
“First half of the season, not great. I mean, it’s pretty sloppy, ” Lashlee said. “I think everybody on the field is accountable for that. Obviously, starts with us.
It’s been called really tight. Obviously, the turnovers, the snapping the ball and they’re not offsides. Some of that sloppy stuff happens in Game 1, but a whole lot happened in the first half, we got to get cleaned up.”

ETAMU puts three on the board

After a Kevin Jennings red zone interception, the Lions drove 68 yards on eight plays that finished with a 29-yard field goal from Ozlo Rigby. Mustangs still hold a comanding lead, 21-3 with 5:20 to go in the second quarter.

Chris Johnson puts SMU up 21

Chris Johnson made the most of his first touch in an SMU jersey, taking a run 22 yards to the house. Johnson made multiple people miss with his quick moves to cap off a nice drive by SMU. This drive also saw RJ Maryland record his first touches since the Stanford game in October of 2024. SMU leads 21-0 with 14:12 left in the first half.

SMU fortunate to keep ETAMU off the board

Following a strip sack of Kevin Jennings, the Lions find the end zone a few plays later. Will Madonna connected with EJ Oakman for a big gain. That pass setup the Lions at the 10-yard line. ETAMU could not get the ball into the end zone and subsequently missed a 23-yard field goal. Missed opportunity for the Lions.

SMU defense starts off strong

On 3rd down at 13, Alex Kilgore picked off Will Madonna by bouncing the ball off of his feet and into his hands. Club takeaway is back after just 10 minutes. SMU now leads 14-0 with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Mustangs strike first

Kevin Jennings finds Romello Brinson for a 63-yard touchdown on the third play from scrimmage! It didn’t take long for SMU to find the end zone. Jennings placed the deep ball perfectly in stride and the senior receiver did the rest to put SMU on the board.
