SMU came in at No. 21 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings revealed Tuesday night on ESPN. The Mustangs have an opportunity to punch their ticket to the ACC Championship with a win Saturday at Cal.

SMU’s the third-highest ranked ACC team in the CFP behind Miami and Virginia.

If SMU wins when it takes on Cal this weekend at 7 p.m. CT, it’ll play for the championship. If Virginia wins Saturday, that’ll be the opponent for the Mustangs.

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee knows part of his team experienced the run to the ACC Championship and College Football Playoff last year. There’s some experience there, but plenty of newcomers haven’t enjoyed that opportunity yet.

“I mean it doesn’t hurt. I mean really this is the third year,” Lashlee said Tuesday. “We’ve been in it, I mean the last year in the American we had to go undefeated in the league. Last year, we pretty much had to go undefeated and so the whole month of November was a must-win. This year, we’ve been coming from behind and needing some help, so it was obviously a must-win and this Saturday is no different. Now I’ll say I mean the hardest thing to do in sports is clinch or close and you know both us and Virginia have that opportunity this week, but Pitt’s still in it, Miami, Duke, I mean, there’s a lot of people still in it. But us and Virginia know if you can win, you don’t need any help and that’s hard.

“And it’s senior day out there, so, you know, we’ve been playing good football lately that doesn’t guarantee we will Saturday, so we’ve got to keep the same mindset, the same intensity. Our guys know what we’re playing for. At the same time, you’ve got to play loose and confident. You can’t get all uptight because of what’s on the line, act or play different. We gotta play like we’ve been playing and go earn it.”
