by:Liam Fitzgibbon03/05/22

SMU Football hit the field for their second day of spring ball on Saturday morning. Here are some of On The Pony Express’ takeaways from our time watching practice.

Wide Receivers continue to shine

After having an impressive spring debut just a day ago, the Mustang receiving corps has another successful day. Senior Rashee Rice continued to show improvement upon his strong 2021 campaign, making several contested catches as he adjusts to moving to the outside role. Sophomore Dylan Goffney shined during the team period, hauling in a pair of difficult sideline passes from quarterback Tanner Mordecai. Duncanville product, Roderick Daniels Jr, was running in the slot with the first team today and showed much improvement as he looks to take the next step. Junior Calvin Wiggins made a handful of nice catches during the team period, hauling in one for a score over cornerback Jahari Rogers.

Defense beginning to figure it out

After having a rough day yesterday, Scott Symons’ unit had much more success on the field today. Sophomore safety, Isaiah Nwokobia is noticeably bigger this year, and was able to break up two passes during the tempo period at the beginning of practice. Jahari Rogers had a better day on the field today, making a pair of nice plays as he broke up passes intended for Nolan Matthews-Harris during the team period. Illinois State transfer Shanon Reid made his mark in practice, intercepting a pass that Jayleen Record couldn’t handle, and took it for a score.

Other Notes:

The SMU specialists took the field for the first time today, with Brendan Hall connecting on 5-of-6 field goal attempts (20, 30, 35, 35 right hash, and 40 were the distance on the makes). Cornerback duo, Brandon Crossley and Bryce McMorris, played very well during the team period after the Mustangs had moved to Ford Stadium for the day. Running backs Ulysses Bentley IV and TJ McDaniel continued to show improvement in the pass-catching game, taking a pair of passes for 15 yard gains.
