Personal Life

Tanner Mordecai may have been a consensus four-star recruit coming out of Waco (Texas) Midway, but he was more than that on the high school fields of the Lone Star State. He led Midway to a 15-1 record as a senior while throwing for over 4,000 yards, rushing for another 1,000-plus and totaling 76 touchdowns. He enrolled at Oklahoma where he redshirted his first year and served as a backup to Jalen Hurts in 2019. He lost the starting quarterback battle to Spencer Rattler in 2020. Mordecai replaced Rattler in the first half of the 2020 Red River Showdown. But Rattler started the second half. That was when Mordecai and his family realized he would have to transfer. He settled on SMU because he could start and also was familiar with the offense. SMU’s offensive coordinator is Garrett Riley, Lincoln Riley’s brother. He is the son of Leann and Micah Mordecai.
