A former South Carolina Gamecocks standout now has the opportunity to run his own program at the high school level.

Syvelle Newton, who played multiple positions in Columbia from 2003 until 2006, was named this week as the new head coach at Great Falls High in the Palmetto State.

After a standout prep career at Marlboro County in Bennettsville, Newton signed with USC under former head coach Lou Holtz as a dual-threat quarterback prospect.

He ended up playing quarterback, wide receiver, running back, and defensive back during his time with the Gamecocks. Newton tallied over 4,000 total yards on offense and finished his college career as one of four players in the NCAA with 600 or more yards in every offensive category: passing, rushing, and receiving.

We are thrilled to announce the hiring of Coach Newton as the head football coach at Great Falls High School,” Great Falls athletics director Joshua Jennings said in a release. “He brings a work ethic and a love for the game of football that is unrivaled. Additionally, his strength and conditioning background will be a major asset not only for our football program, but for our entire athletics department.”

After his college career at South Carolina, Newton spent time in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.

“It is with great pride that we welcome Coach Newton to the Red Devil family,” said Dr. Jamal Sanders, the principal of Great Falls. “His unparalleled energy, extensive knowledge of strength and conditioning, and commitment to embedding mental health awareness in the game make him an exceptional addition to our program”

Newton has previous coaching experience, too. He worked in a role with the Gamecocks under Steve Spurrier during the 2012 season.

At the high school level, he has turned in stints at Blythewood, Brookland-Cayce, and Keenan.

The release notes that Newton is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree from Webster University. He previously graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts.

“Being from a small town myself, I understand what it takes to build a program that showcases what small town communities are all about,” Newton said in the school’s release. “It’s not only a blessing, but a privilege to be named head football coach at Great Falls. I look forward to leading the Red Devils to success!”
