One of the biggest needs this offseason for South Carolina was adding depth and experience to their young wide receiver room. With the addition of Coastal Carolina transfer wide out Jared Brown, the Gamecocks are getting just that and more.

“On the roster it says, ‘WR'(wide receiver) by my name. I would put ‘ATH’ (athlete),” said Brown. “They moved me around everywhere (at Coastal). I’m a receiver but they can move me into different places.”

Standing at 6-0, 190 pounds, Brown arrives in Columbia with two years of eligibility remaining. Playing in 25 games during his time at Coastal, he brings plenty of experience with him too. As a redshirt freshman in 2022, he earned freshman All-American honors from the Football Writers Association of America. His play continued to grow this past season after working with former Ridge View High School head coach (2015-20) Perry Parks joining the Chanticleers staff as a wide receivers coach prior to the 2023 season.

“At the end of the day, no matter what conference you’re playing in, college football is college football. I gained experience from coach Parks. He was really big on route running, no matter if you’re (lined up) inside or outside. Every day in practice we would really work on routes and break points. (Just) the little things that would make us better.”

That attention to detail allowed Brown to compile over 1,000 all-purpose yards with 58 catches for 740 receiving yards and four touchdowns, which ranked second best for the Chanticleers. He added 252 yards rushing, which included scoring on a 77-yard run.

It’s that experience, and production, that the Gamecocks will be relying on as USC’s top two returning wides out are Luke Doty and Nyck Harbor. Doty and Harbor are South Carolina’s only returning wide outs who caught double digit passes in 2023.

“I feel like I can lead through my play, at first. Then, if I need to say something to bring the team up I will. The first thing that I need to do is produce so that they can see me leading that way.”
