College baseball teams are able to add another paid assistant to staff beginning July 1, and it seems like South Carolina has its top candidate in Joey Holcomb.

GamecockCentral has confirmed the Gamecocks are set to bring on the Campbell assistant at the start of next month. He’ll serve as the team’s third paid assistant.

Holcomb comes over after a pair of years with the Camels helping offensively and in recruiting. That includes a very successful 2023 season at the plate.

Led by a prolific offense, Campbell was a top 16 seed candidate this year and finished the regular season inside the top 16 of the RPI.

The Camels ultimately earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They made it to the Columbia regional final before losing to South Carolina.

This season, though, an offense Holcomb helped coordinate hit .318/.439/.561 with 123 home runs and 129 doubles.

In two seasons with the Camels, Holcomb helped the offense hit .309 with a .980 OPS. They hit 241 home runs over two seasons with a .350 BABIP.

Campbell won 40 games and made the NCAA Tournament both years he was on staff.

Holcomb was at North Carolina State the two years before heading to Campbell, coaching the Wolfpack in 2020 and 2021.

In his only full season in Raleigh Holcomb and the Wolfpack hit .286/.367/.493 with a .333 BABIP. That yar NC State went on a postseason run that ended in the College World Series.

Holcomb was a longtime assistant at UNC-Greensboro under Link Jarrett where the Spartans were one of the better teams in the Southern Conference over that stretch.

Holcomb was part of one NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017–which included a SoCon Tournament championship the same year. UNC-G won the SoCon regular season title in 2018 with Holcomb on staff.

He’s been part of six 35-plus win seasons dating back to 2016.

The Gamecocks’ staff has certainly fluctuated over the course of the last few weeks. Justin Parker left last week to be the pitching coach at Mississippi State.

South Carolina hired Matt Williams from Liberty to fill that role, and his contract has yet to be brought in front of the board of trustees yet.

South Carolina is coming off arguably its best season since 2016. The Gamecocks won 40 games and earned a top 16 seed for the first time in seven seasons (six tournaments).

The program’s Super Regional appearance is the first since 2018.
