Mark Kingston, Saturday Postgame, South Carolina-Arkansas Games 2&3

After picking up a series win vs. South Carolina, Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn spoke to the media. Here’s what he had to say.

Opening statement

“Yeah, just a really gutsy game two win by our team. I felt like a lot of guys contributed, whether it was base running or driving in a run, just a lot of things I really liked. And I thought our pitching was really good. Brady was outstanding. Mack didn’t have his best stuff, and I thought Gage came in and did a super job for us. But it was a good series win. Finally won a game three on the road and looking forward to getting back.”

On getting the win in game three to win the series and split the DH

“It was a huge game for both teams. They were trying to get over .500 in the league, we were trying to win a series on the road. After losing the first game the way we did, it kind of got away from us early, maybe fifth or sixth inning. For us to come back and win game two, that was really big for us.”

On Brady Tygart’s outing

“Well, he was throwing three pitches for a strike. Threw his fastball a lot for a strike, breaking ball, slider, just the regular curveball, threw the changeup. I mean, he just pitched and he got ahead. And he kind of got to throw what he wanted to throw and kept them off balance. That’s the main reason he got to stay out there so long.”

On offensive breakout in game two of the DH

“The difference is they just did a good job driving in runs. We had runners all over the bases and finally today we busted it open there in the seventh. We were planning on sending Brady back out for the seventh inning. But the inning lasted so long that we just said we need to go to the next guy.”

On Peyton Holt’s day

“Yeah, he had a super day at the plate. He hit the ball off the top of the left field wall, missed a homer by maybe a foot or two. Got a couple base hits to right field, maybe three actually opposite field, which is really good to see. Made a really nice catch out in right center. Just had a good day. He spark plugged for us, we needed that.”

On Mason Molina’s start in game one of the DH

“I would call it a big off day. He walked seven in 3.1. Two or three four-pitch walks where it really wasn’t competitive. That was disappointing, that was probably the disappointing part of the day was we just didn’t get a good start in the first game. But we sure did in game three and we needed that.”

On hitting approach in game two of the DH

“I thought they just did a good job of taking what the pitcher was giving them. They were pitching us in a whole lot and we hit it pretty good. When they were working us away, weren’t trying to pull the ball. Just a really good approach there. And a lot of our hits were with two strikes. Two strikes, trying to hit the ball through the middle or the other way pretty much all the time.”

On the all around team effort

“We needed them all. It was super hot and humid out here all day. Between games, we just stayed in the dugout. They disappeared into the locker room in the air conditioning. We just hung out and ate and talked and waited for game two to get here. I thought our guys really toughed it out today. I was really proud of them.”
