Tennessee kicked off week two on Monday as the Vols continue preparations for Thursday’s first major scrimmage of the pre-season.

For Tennessee’s offense the search continues for answers at left guard and at tackle. The search is also on for a back up center to senior Cooper Mays. Monday was a maintenance day for Mays which meant more opportunities for others. Opportunities that Mays said are much needed.

“Vysen and Addison have taken a step forward I think behind me. They are both big, strong guys that can hold up in the middle as long as they can get the fine details of the offense down it will be good,” Mays said.

At the guard spot Mays said there is plenty of bodies there, but it’s a group of young guys that needs lots of reps.

“You look at the guard spot and we have a lot of young guys at that spot. Mo Clipper, Masai Reddick and Addison Nichols plays all the inside spots. Getting them more experience in our offense and in the college game. It’s a hard thing to adjust to. I think they have taken steps forward in changing their bodies around and getting stronger.”

Mays has also taken on responsibility on the leadership front for Tennessee’s offensive front.

“I have had to take on a new role for our team,” Mays said. “I feel like I was a pretty good leader last year. I have taken over a lot of Jerome’s (Carvin) role. I have been trying to run with it and do the best I can at it. It’s been going pretty well.”
