Tennessee-Iowa's total in Citrus Bowl tied for lowest of any bowl game

Tennessee’s matchup against Iowa in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl is tied for the lowest total of any bowl game, according to Circa Sports. The Vols and Hawkeyes total is set at 37.5, with Tennessee as an eight-point favorite. 

DraftKings on Sunday night opened with the total set at 36.5.

According to Circa, the only other total as low as Tennessee-Iowa is Bowling Green and Minnesota in the Quick Lane Bowl, another 37.5-point total. Rutgers and Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium is a 40.5-point total and James Madison and Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl is a 41.5-point total. 

No. 21 Tennessee (8-4) and No. 16 Iowa (10-3) are scheduled for a 1 p.m. Eastern Time start on New Year’s Day. The game will be televised by ABC.

Iowa’s lowest total this season was 25 at Nebraska on November 24, with the under hitting in the Hawkeyes’ 13-10 win. Rutgers and Iowa had a 27.5-point total with the under again hitting in a 22-0 win for the Hawkeyes. 

Iowa’s average total through 13 games this season is 34.7. The under has hit in 11 times in those 13 games, with the two overs coming against Western Michigan (43), a 41-10 Iowa win, and Michigan State (36), a 26-16 Iowa win.

The Hawkeyes have won four games in which they scored 15 points or fewer — 15-6 at Wisconsin, 15-13 vs. Illinois, 13-10 at Nebraska and 10-7 at Northwestern — and have scored 24 or fewer points in 11 of 13 games. 

Tennessee’s 20-13 win over Texas A&M in October was the lowest scoring total in a win during Josh Heupel’s head-coaching career.

Iowa ranked 133rd in FBS in total offense, third in punting

Iowa is dead last in total offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season, ranked No. 133 with 3,105 yards. Iowa punter Tory Taylor has just over 1,000 more yards in punts than Iowa has offensive yards, with 4,119 yards on 86 punts, averaging 47.9 yards per punt. 

The Hawkeyes are ranked 130th in scoring offense, averaging 16.6 points per game, but are fourth in scoring defense, giving up just 13.2 points per game. 

Tennessee is ranked 41st in scoring offense, averaging 31.5 points per game this season, after leading college football at 46.1 points per game in 2022.

Both the over and the under hit six times during Tennessee’s 12-game regular season. The lowest total was 47.5 at Alabama on October 21. The average total for the Vols this season has been 56.5.
