Joey Aguilar is up to fifth in Heisman Trophy odds, according to updated numbers from BetMGM, after the Tennessee Football quarterback threw for 371 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns in the 44-41 overtime loss to Georgia on Saturday.

The new Heisman odds for Aguilar are set at +1500, tied with LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed.

Miami quarterback Carson Beck is the current Heisman favorite at +700, ahead of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer at +900, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore at +1100 and Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton at +1200.

Aguilar on the season is up to 906 yards passing and 10 nine passing touchdowns. He has completed 63 of 95 passes through three games while also rushing 11 times for 26 yards and a touchdown.

He was 16-for-28 for 247 yards and three touchdowns in his Tennessee debut on August 30, leading the Vols to a 45-26 win over Syracuse in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Aguilar completed 23 of 31 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against ETSU on September 6. He didn’t play after halftime, with the Vols on their way to a 72-17 win.

He was 24-for-36 for 371 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions against Georgia, while also running for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Aguilar started a perfect 14-for-14 for 213 yards and three total touchdowns in the first quarter.

“I definitely started off with a groove,” Aguilar said after the game. “Those come and go, but I just got to do better in progression and just take what the defense gives me. (I) felt like I was forcing a little bit of things like that in the middle. But (Georgia is) a great program, they they schemed up some defensive fronts and things like that. So I just got to be better.”

Tennessee leads SEC in scoring, passing offense, passing yards

Through three games, Aguilar has Tennessee’s offense leading the SEC in scoring, at 52.7 points per game. The Vols also lead the league in passing offense (358.7 yards per game) and total passing yards (1,076) and are third in touchdown passes (11).

Aguilar said during his postgame press conference Saturday night that Tennessee is just getting started, as videnced by the production the Vols put up against Georgia.

“So much better,” he said. “I mean, I don’t think there’s a limit. Not even offense, but defense and special teams. Everybody comes into work and strives every day, and this just shows us that we got to push a little more.

“Everywhere, whether it’s the field, workouts, the film room. But it’s exciting to know that we’re not at our best yet.”
