WeAreSC coverage of USC – Colorado

In case you missed all of our coverage of USC’s big 37-14 win against Colorado, here’s a look back, including video highlights from the sideline.

We learned a handful of things about the Trojans, including the fact that a running back decision might be coming, and a No. 2 receiver might have arrived (On3+).

Marc Kulkin provided his real-time thoughts in his Sunday Takeaway (On3+), including some specific opinions about the USC offense. Greg Katz discussed the USC win in his IMHO column (On3+), but also took a look at the impending coaching decision. And Chris Arledge waxed poetic about an even more perfect day in his Musings, with a USC win to go along with losses by Notre Dame, UCLA and Oregon.

Plus, the WeAreSC staff provided their 5 Things in the weekly game recap video that dives into player of the game, play of the game, expectation met, surprise development and biggest takeaway.

USC offers Elijah Brown

USC’s pipeline with Mater Dei quarterbacks hit a bit of a snag recently. J.T. Daniels transferred out of USC after one season and Bryce Young decommitted during the 2020 recruiting cycle. The Trojans are officially taking a swing at the next superstar Monarch quarterback, with an offer extended to 2024 signal-caller Elijah Brown on Monday.

Brown was a known commodity as a freshman last year. He arrived on the national scene last Friday, leading Mater Dei to a 42-21 win over St. John Bosco. Brown completed 13 of 18 passes for 263 yards and five touchdowns in the win. USC managed to get in still fairly early in the recruitment for the 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback. Only Arizona, Pittsburgh and Utah had offered previously. Brown will likely finish this season with plenty more offers and go on to be one of the more highly-recruited prospects in his class.

Max Gibbs makes a big impact

It wasn’t an extensive showing, but true freshman Max Gibbs did make his college debut against Colorado. He participated in one goal-line play and got his job done, shoving blockers into the backfield and disrupting the running play. Colorado scored on the play by bouncing the ball outside and outrunning the USC linebackers to the corner of the endzone. But USC might have found something with the massive Gibbs on the defensive line.

During his Sunday evening media call, head coach Donte Williams smiled when talking about that play.

“He took on all 3 guys that tried to block him,” Williams said. “He clogged the hole up…What he had to do on that particular play, he did it…They’re not going to be able to move him.”

Williams said he hopes Gibbs’ role will continue to grow, whether it’s on offense or defense.
