Mikey Williams has announced his commitment to UCF, he said via Instagram. He enrolled in online classes at Memphis, but never played a game or took on-campus classes before “parting ways” with the program.

Williams did not officially enter the NCAA transfer portal after sharing his intention to do so earlier this week. He is facing nine felony charges after a shooting near his home in California, and pled guilty to one count of criminal threatening on Nov. 30. Sentencing is set for Aug. 12

In a statement to On3’s Pete Nakos, Williams’ attorney — Troy Owens — said the decision to transfer was because the university could’ve prevented Williams from playing during the 2024-25 season.

“Weeks went by and Mr. Williams stopped receiving responses from the University,” Owens said in the statement. “It became clear to Mr. Williams that having him play this season was not a priority for the University. What was even more frustrating was that Mr. Williams learned that the committee [review] was also going to decide whether, or not, he would be allowed to play in the 2024-2025 season even after being sentenced to a misdemeanor.

“This was not something that Mr. Williams even thought was up for discussion. This caused him to take immediate action to protect the prospect of him playing collegiate basketball in the 2024-2025 season.”

Mikey Williams was a four-star recruit out of high school and came in as the No. 52-ranked prospect in the country from the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
