North Texas guard Rubin Jones has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. He spent four years with the Mean Green and put up the best numbers of his career this past season.

Jones set a new career-high with 12.1 points per game to go with 3.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists to lead UNT to a 19-15 overall record. He ranked second on the team in scoring only to Jason Edwards, who averaged 19.1 points and also planned on entering the portal.

Rubin Jones has steadily gotten better throughout his career at North Texas as he became the winningest player in program history. The 2023-24 season was the first year he averaged double-digit scoring, and that came after he earned Conference USA All-Defensive Team honors in 2023.

North Texas’ season came to an end in the second round of the NIT this year after a 10-8 record through AAC play. It was the first season for Ross Hodge after taking over for Grant McCasland, who left to replace Mark Adams at Texas Tech. However, the Mean Green are now down Jones and Edwards to the portal, which could change things next year.

Edwards has a prolific scoring knack, averaging 19.1 points per game and scoring north of 30 multiple times in his first season playing Division I basketball. He transferred to North Texas from junior college, and quickly moved into a starring role. He’s also an adept rebounder, pulling down more than two a game from the guard spot.

He played in 34 games, starting 22 for the Mean Green. And while Edwards is already and adept scorer, there are some needed refinements to his game. As a ball handler and creator, he can show more playmaking ability while cutting back and limiting turnovers. And while he shoots 49.2% from the field. his 35% from beyond the 3-point line is solid, but a bump up there could vault him into rarer air as a scorer.

Edwards will have multiple years of eligibility remaining.
