TCU Horned Frogs forward JaKobe Coles has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, per Jamie Shaw.

JaKobe Coles played his high school basketball at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas. There, he was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2020, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He also was the 31st-ranked power forward in that class and the 140th-ranked player overall in that cycle.

This is the second time that JaKobe Coles has been in the Transfer Portal. He previously played at Butler, before transferring to TCU. That was a shortened freshman season, which saw Coles suffer a meniscus injury that sidelined him.

Coles went on to play two seasons at TCU. There, he played 100 games over the course of two seasons with the Horned Frogs. That includes 12 games where he started for TCU, while averaging 15.2 minutes per game. He, during his two seasons with TCU, averaged 7.0 points, 1.0 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.5 steals per game.

In the 2023-24 season, JaKobe Coles helped the TCU Horned Frogs earn a 9-9 record in Big 12 play and a 21-13 record overall. The Horned Frogs made the NCAA Tournament, losing to Utah State in their first game. That came a year after TCU made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

TCU and the Transfer Portal

The Transfer Portal opened on March 18, 2024, and is scheduled to stay open for 45 days from that point. That was the day after Selection Sunday, which some coaches found frustrating, as it created a distraction during the postseason. However, most players on teams in postseason tournaments decided to wait until after their team was done playing to enter the Transfer Portal.

Last season, a total of 1,842 men’s college basketball players entered the Transfer Portal, meaning that there are plenty of players that coaches need to evaluate moving forward. As of now, there are 633 players who have already entered the portal this cycle.

TCU has been active on both sides of the Transfer Portal to this point. To this point, along with JaKobe Coles, the Horned Frogs also have guard Micah Peavy who intends on entering the portal. Meanwhile, guard Dug McDaniel is set to visit TCU as a potential incoming transfer.

There is still plenty of time for players to enter the Transfer Portal and decide where to transfer to. So, the Horned Frogs probably aren’t done yet, but what does end up happening remains to be seen.
