Should he white out the part about “what Dan Mullen built” beforehand?

I think a good bit of Mullen's "lazy recruiting" had more to do with the shenanigans going on in Oxford than anything in Starkville.

Also his job hunting, particularly after 2010, 2012 and 2015 seasons (NSD 2011, 2013 and 2016). When he was dialed in, he signed some great classes, in particular NSD 2009 (finish), 2010, 2012 and 2015. You could even see what he could accomplish on NSD 2017 when he loaded up on JUCOs because he wanted out so badly, even though it left a hole in our team that we will see later. You could see his ability but you also got so frustrated because you knew he was not maximizing. He definitely is not lazy.

I think it was because: a) Hevesy didn't like recruiting and Mullen didn't make him do much; b) Mullen had a lot of last second flips, which was primarily Oxford but involved other schools as well; and c) Mullen chose not to go after very many highly rated recruits from out of state.

As to c), I understand Mullen not wanting to waste time going after recruits who were interest in bigger programs, and we all know he did an excellent job of finding under-rated recruits and getting the most out of them. Still, I would have liked to see him try to get bigger names even if the effort would not have been fruitful. Just having an MSU cap on the table on announcement day can have an impact on future recruiting.

Was that Alabama's annual pay for play or the salaries players got going to the NFL? I heard some of their players took a cut in pay.

That certainly played a part, but don't discount the bull **** factor. There are many in the MSU fanbase that believe anything they hear, especially from certain "fan" media types.

Mullen was not lazy. He understandably hated recruiting and it's hard to be great at anything you hate. He had an abrasive personality, which means he wasn't as much help closing the deal as some head coaches. He let some assistants have a pass on recruiting.

Even with all that, his staff recruited solidly. The above hurt on a few recruits that would have potentially filled some holes for us, particularly on the OL, where he had almost half his seasons limited by weak spot on the OL. As poorly as he did with WR, I don't remember any off hand where he and/or his staff just obviously screwed the pooch.

Would agree that his reputation has a lot to do with not getting caught up playing UM's game, the vast majority of the time for the better.

What's amazing is that they managed to recruit those elite defensive players with literally a new DC every year or so. I think we've had 7 DCs in the last 10 years. Give Dan his due.

Recruiting is partly the coach, partly the school. MSU has been producing defensive players for years, that has as much to do with it as Dan Mullen. I give him credit for finding the offensive talent, like Dak, Bear, Ross, etc.

you do know Hevesy was the one that found Dak right? i like how so many of you want to say if it wasn't for Dak, but Dak wouldn't have been Dak without Mullen or Hevesy. Hevesy may not been a great recruiter with the Oline, but he did bring in some raw talent that was developed. Say what you will about Mullen's recruiting, but there isn't anyone better at player development than that staff.

I didn't say Hevesy never recruited anyone, but he doesn't like to do it and Mullen doesn't make him do very much of it. (that was the story at State, don't know what the situation is at Florida). And in the post you were responding to I specifically stated that Mullen was excellent and finding and developing under-rated talent.

A guy on Finebum just had the perfect description of Dan Mullen having “Steve Spurrier’s mouth with Will Muschamp’s Trophy case...”
