Is there asnything, anymore, that somebody is not offended at? Holy **** have we become a country full of nothing by thin skinned p*****s? Or is thin skinned p*****s offensive, too? I'll rephrase it lightly protected vaginal walls.

WTF?

While I know of no evidence of racism associated with our “Gator Bait” cheer at UF sporting events, there is horrific historic racist imagery associated with the phrase.

What does that even mean?

I'm going to go ahead and prepare myself for losing Bully. He probably barked at a black guy once or twice.

You’re up, LSU. I’m sick of being called “Tiger Bait” after getting an *** whooping in your stadium. You might even say I’m “outraged” about it. It’s time.

You can’t make this **** up. No one has any balls in any position at universities. I guess since most are liberal cucks it stands to reason. They start 17ing with stuff at State I’ll take my measly 10k/year and go to the house.

From the article, "While I know of no evidence of racism associated with our “Gator Bait” cheer at UF sporting events, there is horrific historic racist imagery associated with the phrase. Accordingly University Athletics and the Gator Band will discontinue the use of the cheer what is the "horrific historic racist imagery associated with the phrase?"

Well, it appears that there is some folklore associated with attracting gators with slave babies. Snopes implies that it is most likely not true and cites reasons. Although I wouldn't put it past someone who owned slaves to do so, it makes sense that sacrificing potential slave labor for a gator was likely upside down from a financial position. However, leave it to our hateful past to have created shameful postcards and other appalling memorabilia that made light of the rumors/possible events.

The Stephen D. Lee statue on the Drill Field will be the first thing to go here, I've seen it mentioned a couple times already. Even though he's not R.E.L. he was related and a confederate so therefore he was a bad man.

These last few weeks have allowed me to learn a lot of horrific and terrible events in our nation's history.
It has also allowed me to learn about the history of some terms and phrases I dont associate with hate/racism/oppression, but now can see why others do.

This Florida chant is tough. Apparently black babies/children were used as bait for alligator hunting. Well yeah- thats pretty 17ing unconscionable and perhaps the term 'gator bait' shouldnt be used if that is the history of where the phrase comes from.
If the phrase has always just meant bait for gators, then perhaps it isnt bad and should be continued since I dont think anyone currently views the phrase in that light.

Words and phrases mean different things at different points in time through history. Words are OK to use now that werent OK to use decades or hundreds of years ago. Conversely, words that were OK to use then may not be OK to use now.
This is pretty reasonable and easy to understand for most people.

Kept that one hidden for a while. I guess nothing should surprise me any longer. Not dying on that hill - you're on your own, Flarda.

I have to think less than 3% of the population would make that connection and for those under the age of 50 it's probably close to 0% or it would have come up long before now.

I think you've got a lot of people doing a bunch of research into things nobody has thought of in 50 years to stir stuff up. The images you share are terrible but I'm pretty certain nobody chanting that at a UF game over the last 50 years has even remotely thought about using it in that context. One would thing that thousands of AA fans have chanted that at games as well.

As mentioned, phrases have ways of meaning different things over years and I would certainly think this would qualify as one of those. I think it all things you have to apply a reasonable standard context.

In 2020 at a UF football game where team is the Gators is it reasonable to assume that a chant of "gator bait" would mean that they intend to kick the crap out of the other team or what's indicated on the images?

I'm not so sure "it would have come up before now" and I honestly didn't know until I looked it up.

But is it worth the bad press to combat? Or is it easier to just stop the chant....

No one has been lynched at ole miss for over 60 years, still doesn't mean they can put a noose on a statue after every win...

It's true. Freak-nik, however, is perfect acceptable.

Hmmm, interesting. Seems like a dumb financial decision, much easier and cheaper ways like with chickens. Humans are not normal prey of gators, and most predators stick to what they know.

Of course it's not worth the bad press at this point, especially since they made people aware of it who weren't aware of it before.

And c'mon, the noose around the statue's neck thing isn't even remotely close to being the same as this. That actually has the same context as lynching. The Florida gator bait chant has a completely different context. The context is what's different and any rational person can see that.

Again, I agree it's not a hill to die on, they have to stop the chant at this point. Just silly that this is all now coming up.

Coca Cola might as well get ready. Invented by confederate colonel John Pemberton. Sucks because I really don't want to start drinking Pepsi. I wish I could add sarcasticks to imply I'm only kidding but honestly nothing would surprise me at this point. Absolutely nothing. The thing that's sad is some of these guys went on to do great things post war. Our founding president for example. Should the single everlasting piece of their legacy always only be tied to the war despite their achievements afterward? This is why you can't just completely bury history you don't like under a rock. Sooner or later you're going to start canceling out things you may want to keep around. Like Coke for example.

It could also be viewed as the next big purge of old south imagery and connotations. Perhaps if folks had taken this crazy equality thing a little more seriously sooner, we would be way further down the road.

Yeah. Like when MSU was called the "Maroons", Glad we are not that anymore...

Maroons are descendants of Africans in the Americas who formed settlements away from slavery.
