After the Kids Day practice, I was 100% convinced that Hank just didn't have what it took to be a P4 starting QB. His performances at Auburn, against Indiana, and at Kids Day seemed to indicate that he just didn't have that "it" factor to compete at the highest level.

But it's obvious he didn't hang his head after Kids Day, he put in the necessary work, and he grabbed the starting role. So kudos to him for doing what, I'm guessing, 95% of Hawkeye Nation didn't think he could do....win the starting job.

Granted, we're only 3 games in and he hasn't been perfect by any stretch, but you can see the potential. Big kid, with a big arm, that moves surprisingly well. What sold it for me was against ISU, same score as the Indiana game (13-13), and rather than retreat into a shell, he did what he needed to do to get us into FG range for the winning kick. And against the "lesser" teams, he's shown a knack for moving the offense well, taking what the defense gives him, and throws a really pretty, catchable ball.

Who knows what happens the rest of the year....but at least for now, we seem to have found a pretty decent QB.

I think I'll wait for the next three weeks before stating anything. That is the problem over the first three weeks, we haven't played much. I think ISU will be fine, but I honestly have no idea up until this weekend. With regards to the 13-13 statement, he needs to look downfield, at 7:08, the deep shot was open for an easy 6 to Diaz. They took the game out of his hands on that last drive where he had one check down pass, and one designed run, the rest were handoffs.

Good summary, I just want the best qb to start and play very well. After Kids Day the numbers suggested Heck but Brown is showing poise and accuracy of most all throws and Heck is a little off on the accuracy. Brown is just a good enough runner to gouge out 3 to 5 to 8 yards with an opening.

I know KF doesnt like to have most of his qbs run but in shotgun on read handoff at the mesh point I think it is really important for your qb to keep the ball when the DEnds etc keep crashing down on the running back. Burn those defenders a couple of times, make them stay home and it should make for cutback lanes for the run game.

I also bought into the theory everyone had that he doesn’t respond will to big situations (playing great against an FCS opponent at auburn then throwing 3 picks in the first half against Arkansas the next game, Indiana missed screen, poor kids day) and wanted Heck. I changed my mind pretty quickly week 1. I think he has responded very well to adversity at every point thus far this season (starting as the number 2 on the depth chart and passing Heck, recovering from the kids day disaster, ISU start, performing pretty well overall with the pressure of a QB battle)

The final drive against ISU he only threw one pass, a check down on the first play of that drive that went for 8 yards. But the most impressive moment for me was how he responded after the offense looked pretty anemic the first 3 drives. Myself and probably everyone else watching expected Hecklinski to come out the next drive, but Kirk stuck with Hank and he delivered a bomb to Diaz that kickstarted the whole team. I thought he was pretty solid the rest of the game. Kept the chains moving on a night where our longest run play was only 7 yards. I would go as far to say that Hank was the reason we won.

Like you said, the potential/arm talent is obvious. IMO his best trait is how quickly he gets the ball out. I believed he averaged 2.34 seconds to throw against ISU, which is phenomenal. That defensive line they had would have eaten him alive if he couldn’t process things as fast as he can.

Is he a little too trigger happy on the checkdowns? Probably. But it’s not like he never takes shots, when he gets the coverage he wants he can and has thrown deep. As he gains game experience and confidence I think he will feel more empowered to take more risks.

If the lightbulb does indeed come on and he starts hitting more shots down the field, he could be really, really good. Potential NFL career good, he has all the natural talent needed to do so.

Plain and simple - this is the moment of truth for Hank. On Saturday he will have the first significant time he's had as a college QB on the road, and this will be by far the best team he's faced as a starter. Over the next 3 games, he will begin to solidify his legacy. Come the bye week, we will either be talking about having the next Stanzi or wondering if the next Padilla (Heck) needs to get another chance over the next Petras.

All these check downs against lesser opponents that some people were complaining about helps bare fruit in the short term AND long term.

While it’s not sexy, there’s no doubt that Michigan, Ohio State and Washington will game plan for that as well. They’ll have to not let their linebackers drop as deep and open up slants and in routes. Then the safeties will have to creep up to defend those. That’s when you hit them on a deep double move or post. You’ll never go broke taking a profit.

Remember, though, Stanzi didn't become Stanzi that year until the PSU game in week 10. After he was anointed the starter following the Pitt game, he went out and lost his first 2 conference games in a row.

Those talking about checkdowns.....remember, it was a checkdown/screen pass that he totally botched against Indiana that would have most likely won us the game. The kid's obviously learned and has gotten better.

He may, or may not, pan out after these next 3 games....but doesn't take away the fact that he obviously busted his @$$ to get the starting job after what happened after kids day.

Hank has his potential "PSU game" each of the next 3 weeks, and he only has one year of eligibility after this, so he's going to have to work a bit faster than Stanzi if he wants to be remembered in the same breath as him in the future. :)

KF said they were even. Both had good and bad days. Then the season started, and Hank Brown has started every game. From over here, that seems odd and some might say, unfair. If it really was that close--and it sure as hell wasn't in the open practice--then Hecklinski deserved to start a game too. How can you say the evaluation was fair when you give one guy the edge by starting him every game? Makes no sense.

The obvious answer, to me at least, is that Brown always was KF's favorite. He's the vanilla game manager who will never question his instructions and always take what appears to be the safest route. If KF is anything, he's predictable, stubborn, and ultra conservative. And anyone who thinks he's changed or will change after more than a quarter of a century may be delusional.

Maybe Brown is the best QB Iowa has right now. I haven't seen enough of Hecklinski to know, largely because he was never given the chance to start a single game despite being the No. 2 QB, ahead of Brown, the last half of last season and totally outplaying Brown in the only public viewing this fall.

Brown has fumbled twice in 10 carries, both against ISU, but he was fortunate enough to recover both. Fumbling on 20 percent of your carries is not a good percentage, or so I'm told. If his name were Akrum Wadley, he'd have been benched. We know that because that's exactly what happened to Wadley, one of the greatest RBs ever to wear the black and gold. But KF, like far too many coaches and far too many members of the general population, sees what he wants to see.

I hope Brown has a great day in Ann Arbor and that the Hawkeyes knock off Michigan. But that doesn't mean I think the QB competition was fair. And if you were Hecklinski, you might not think so either.

I personally don't care if it's God, Jesus, Shiva, Buddha or Jobu giving him his inspiration, I just hope he plays well.
I've always kinda wondered if God, or whoever is running things, is an Iowa fan or a Michigan fan. It's one of life's great mysteries. Although if you go by wins and losses, the answer seems pretty apparent.

I agree thinking that KF has his "image of a QB" in his mind and it is a taller, more dropback or pocket passer, who doesnt have to be a very good runner but just good enough. Brad Banks could have had 500 yards rushing in 2002, and Drew Tate could have run more etc etc but KF is a 1960's product of football.

I heard that or read that Heck has some turnovers in the last week of practice and you know turnovers are verboten to KF. If Brown keeps fumbling and losing them them who knows. If Brown is overwhelmed by Mich's defense there might be a quick hook. Does KF defer to Lester on these QB matters? I dont know but KF the old lineman should defer to a guy who played high school and college QB and coached qbs.

I agree that Brown probably fits the QB image, but KF has had a number of QBs who didn't, not just Banks and Tate. My time is limited at the moment, so just a quick quibble. Tate, while an effective runner, didn't like to run. The QB draw was restored after he left.

Duke's Wadley comparison is inapt. I'll say more about why when time permits.

In lieu of a blowout or injury, Brown will play the entire game vs Michigan. You can take that to the bank.

I'll state the obvious, this is a game where we cannot have turnovers. As much as I prefer Hecklinski, I would not be confident in his game against Michigan. This game is likely to be won by field position, exactly how Michigan won the game against Oklahoma. With all of that said, man would it be nice to hang some points on Michigan to finally get rid of this narrative that Iowa's offense is weak.

Yes he is. First, he assumes it's solely KFs decision. Second, he assumes it was a decision that wasn't "fair". Third, it's not about "fairness", anyway.
The decision was decided and done long before the Tan Man pretended he finally decided. You must be blind or lacking perception to think otherwise. Or you subscribe to Bonespurs' mantra... don't believe your eyes, don't believe your ears, only believe what I tell you. Heck was always second string. So... I'll give this one to Duke.

2 things.

1) Who cares who was 1st or 2nd string at the end of last season? It's irrelevant to who should be getting snaps today.

2) In each game appearance so far Brown has performed at a level that is head and shoulders above Heck. That's a fact. Why should anyone care about who was the starter before, who made the decision that Brown would get the first shot, or whether the competition was fair or not?

I don't understand why anyone is still hung up on this given what we've seen so far. Brown has shown that he absolutely should be the starting QB today. How we got here is irrelevant.
