Would Chadwell take the SC job if offered?...

He is making $4M a year salary at Liberty, made $5.9M with bonuses after the 2023 season and they love him. Would he jump in the frying pan that is SC football? We would have to offer him around $6M guaranteed annually to get him to consider leaving. That sort of money would come with immediate high expectations. Chadwell has to be aware of the history of gamecock football and he knows the difficulty of playing in the SEC.

Would he take the job?

He would need a good turnaround this year for us to ask, imo.

He only won 4 games last year. (I know, irony)

He needs to win a lot to show thats a fluke, and not the norm. He does have a good start at 3-1.

I don't see how it's attractive for him at this point. He was interviewed here last go round and they chose a lifetime position coach instead. Would not blame him if he was still salty over that. Besides other P4 jobs, even SEC jobs will come open soon enough. These new guys at Arkansas and Auburn won't last long and Auburn in particular isn't very patient. Assuming last year was an anomaly for him and so far that would seem to be the case, if he keeps it moving at Liberty he'll get a good offer elsewhere.

So, unlike Beamer, you're prepared to chalk up Chadwell's 4-win season last year as an anomaly. And you're comfortable with the fact he's .500 in Conference USA over the past two seasons. But the USC-SEC probably just isn't attractive to him at this point?

Meh. There’s a reason no P4 team has ever nibbled at him.
Yep. Some of last season job openings: University of California, Los Angeles, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Virginia Tech. Even though these teams not power four but had job openings last season: Tulane, Memphis and South Florida would be a step up from Liberty.

The previous season Wake Forest and Purdue were searching for a head coach.

To be fair, its easier to think of the losing season as an anomaly for Chadwell because hes had only one. (Maybe some earlier when he just took over a bad team?)

Beamer, on the other hand, has had two losing seasons in the last three years.

If things continue to go south and SB is terminated before season's end I can see Briles as interim and considered for the job on a permanent basis.

I joked about that being a conspiracy theory before the season. Now? I could see it happening.

Between 2020 and 2021, his peak at CCU, a bunch of SEC jobs opened up.

I am curiousbif he rebounds and who does pick him up. We may kick ourselves one day, maybe not.

What do you think is a good next step for him? (Obviously assuming last year gets relegated to fluke status)

He needs to string together a few impressive years at Liberty. I thought that job was a good next step from CCU as a bridge to a P4 job.
I just think there must be something to the hesitation for P4 schools in not pursuing him back when CCU was at their peak. With how quick teams are to jump on the next big thing...nobody even nibbled.

Conspiracy theorist, but I wonder if you never hear anything because he has certain schools in mind, and expresses no interest in others.

Based on nothing, just spitballing.

One does wonder, on face value, why teams aren't more interested. I thought the CCU job was big enough to garner attention from at least some ACC schools.

You don't get the benefit of anomalies in year 5 unless you're winning in years 1-4. He's had one winning season in the SEC. Sorry. Should have been canned after that showing.

But he had one in his first three seasons at Liberty in Conference USA and Liberty is a Top 3 recruiter in that conference?

On the flip side, with a 24-team playoff system, Beamer probably makes the CFP playoffs 2 out of 5 seasons competing in the best conference in the country and with a limited budget.

Definitely in 2024.

In 2022, we were ranked #19 to close out the year and had just beat #5 and #7 (breaking CU home streak) back to back and 3 Top Ten teams for the first time in school history. We would have been in.

Yes, he would absolutely take the job if offered, unless a job at a bigger/better program was available the _same_ year. Nobody's turning down an SEC job waiting for a better job to be offered _next_ year. It's all about striking while the iron is hot. But unless he takes Liberty to the playoff this year, I don't think he's likely to get an offer from a bigger/better program.

He needs to win 8-9 games at Liberty this year before I'd be willing to extend an offer. He's been a winner everywhere he's been, but he needs a clear turnaround this year to prove last year was an anomaly.

Winning 4 games in Conference USA in your 3rd Year there is a big stain for him. I would think he would need to win a couple of conference championships , go 11-1, 12-0, and get into the playoffs in order for an SEC program to take a hard look at him at this point.

Yes, he had ONE. Someone above posted that it was a seaon plagued by injuries, but i didnt pay enough attention to verify.

But regardless, I still say a single season is easier to write off as an anomaly than having 2 in 3 seasons. (And maybe 3 out of 4 now?)

And if we keep expanding the playoffs, Beamer could make them every year. Well, probably not the losing seasons.

I think any Gamecock fan would take 2 playoff appearances over the course of 5 years in a field of 24.

The bottom line is that Chadwell is coaching in Conference USA and really hasn't done much outside of Year 1, no postseason wins, and has won 7 of out of 16 games since his 2nd year.

Kent State easily handles most (if not all) of the teams in that conference.

He's not getting an SEC coaching job anytime soon.

Don't disagree on too much. Im sure we'd love to be in the playoffs, even if they expanded to 64 teams.

And I agree somewhat on Chadwell.

At the time of Beamer's hire, he was a no brainer better choice than Beamer. But his slump at Liberty has hurt that resume. He not only needs a rebound year, but probably another really good year after to be considered for big jobs.

24 is likely going to be the max but that gives us a shot once and awhile. Also, we're going to have losing seasons. Lou had 3 in 6 years and Muschamp had 3 in 5 years. This environment is far more difficult now that it was pre-NIL, pre-portal and pre-expansion. The last two seasons were Top 5 schedules. It didn't used to be that bad. And Beamer is not losing games like Muschamp was. The team is typically competitive in most contests.

What is this statement based on? The MAC and Conference USA are about equivalent in terms of competition. Kent State has a losing all time record, has won about 40% of their conference games all time, and has a losing record against Conference USA as a whole.

The Muschamp hire and handling of it thereafter opened my eyes the incompetence of our Board of Trustees (and Ray Tanner). I feel like that if our Board Of Trustees has their hands in the next Coaching hire, we will be just as f***ed as we are now with Beamer.

It sucks being a Carolina fan when all you want is a football team that can go toe to toe with anyone. Beamer is 6 years in and we aren’t even ranked in the top 25!

No one went after curt cignetti for years either...until he was too old...now he is 31-2 at indiana.
Exactly right. Many P4 programs and their fan bases are so elititst and wont consider G5 and FCS coaches. Until one like Cignetti gets a shot a wins a NC

Chadwell won conference championships in our state at FBS, FCS and D2 levels, for 20 years, whille building recruiting relationships w HS coaches in SC, NC, GA, FL.

And we said no thanks buddy
