I've never understood the appeal for an ultra expensive watch. For not much money at all, one watch keeps time just like the next one does. When one quits you get another. I've worn watches my entire life since I got my first one in the 2nd grade, a Timex that I still have that still runs just fine to this day 57 years ago by the way. Current one is a $45 Casio G-Shock that I've had 12 years, runs just as good now as the day I got it
Sunglasses too.
I don’t wear sunglasses ever so I don’t get the appeal anyway.

I actually know a decent amount about high end watches because I had a watch rabbit hole moment earlier in life.
But, with rare exception, people who are into rare watches are mainly into them because of what they signal to others, not because they’re endlessly fascinated by 150+ year old technology. No matter what they tell you the reason is, this is probably the reason. It’s man jewelry.
So who had a Timex Ironman in the 90s? They were all the rage when I was in school. I went to a Christian school and we always had chapel on Wednesdays and everyone had these watches and they beeped at the top of the hour. At 9 am there would be this chorus of beeps from all the Ironmans.

There’s definitely not much utility in expensive watches. All watches are cool and do the same thing.
I'll say this about sunglasses, polarized lenses are 100000000x better than some gas station pair.
In Walmart - cheap sunglasses near $20 on the sunglasses rack. Go to fishing section and get a better pair that are polarized for under $7
Nice! Good to know Coach has good taste in watches. I haven’t caught that yet. Went to my first game in a Cpl years last night & wore a nice watch and it worked. Will wear again next week
I'm rough on watches. The wife went on a kick and thought for a while that I needed a "nice" watch. I broke the crystal on every one of them. I was wearing a Casio G-Shock before that and have ever since.
Sunglasses are where I don't skimp. Dr told me if I can see a shadow I should have on sunglasses and cheap sunglasses give me headaches or make them worse. I live in Maui Jim's for going out and Oakley's for working and playing golf.
Good sunglasses are worth every penny as long as you are responsible enough to keep up with them. Optically good, not fashion fad expensive good. Maui Jim’s are my daily sunglasses and I bought a spare pair just in case I lose my number one pair. My son gave me a pair of Pelagic sunglasses and while I don’t care for the frames, the lenses are fantastic. I have a Garmin Golf watch that I wear playing golf but outside of that I haven’t worn a watch in five years. If I want to know what time it is I look at my phone. If I don’t have my phone, which is often, I look at the sun and deduce that it’s time for a beer.
I’ll say this about sunglasses. A good pair is worth the money. Both in terms of vision & longevity. A friend owns Fine Eyes in Ridgeland, a high end glasses shop. About a year ago I needed sunglasses & had just had a couple pairs of Walgreens ones break within 2 months. So I thought I’ll just go see if my friend has anything in the $50-$75 range. But whatever I don I’m not buying a $200 pair of sunglasses. After trying on a $200 pair (about the cheapest he had), I couldn’t believe the vision quality. Much better than no sunglasses or any sunglasses I’ve tried before. Worth every penny. And at the rate the cheap ones break, I figure I’ll break even on cost in about 3 years.

Ultra expensive is relative. My nice watch I wear is about $12-13k out the door. That feels like a lot until a $50k watch walks in. My collection is worth roughly $20k and my next life milestone piece will be a gold day date.
That may sound wild to some but the way some will read this post is how I look at guys who are worth much less who buy $15k side by sides or $75k bass boats. In 5-10 years my nice watch will be what I paid or more while their purchase depreciates in to relative worthlessness.
I’ve been a watch guy all my life and my son will get a nice collection. It’s just what you’re in to and what you’re willing to spend money on. But in a world of **** we buy, a factory Rolex, AP, or Patek is about as safe a buy you can make.
Sounds like I’m cheap. I don’t mind spending money but I hate wasting it. Guess i splurged on a $250 triathlon watch and fsd on 2026 Tesla …everyone has their own thing

I figured out that when I spend a couple of hundred on sunglasses, not only is my vision much better but I pay a lot more attention to where they are at all times. I have a pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers I've had for 18 years, with the glass lenses, and they are still perfect. That's saved me a lot of money on cheap glasses, and they work so much better.
Maui Jim, Ray Ban and Costa still make actual glass lenses and they don't scratch. I bought a high end pair of polycarbonate Costas and had a scratch within a month.
