Will SEC officiating allow us to beat an undefeated Bama?....

So when the ref throws down his bean bag down and waves his hands above his head that doesn't signal the play is dead? When the ball is resting after a punt and is touched down by the punting team that doesn't end the play? Pretty sure that crew got suspended over that so I doubt that would have happened over a correct call. So the only way a ball is dead after a punt is to pick the ball up and hand it to the referee? I've literally watched hundreds of football games where the punting team downs the ball by touching it when it is just resting on the ground.
If a player on the punt team touches the ball, it is considered to be "illegally touched", but if that player doesn't possess the ball, the receiving team can still pick the ball up and run with it. Whoever it was for us that downed the ball didn't possess it. He just put his hand on top of it as it was laying on the ground. So Memphis was allowed to pick the ball up and run with it if they chose. However, the back judge was waving his hands over his head after our player touched the ball, which signaled the play dead. This is an "inadvertent signal" and should make the play dead, by rule. So the play should have been dead as soon as he signaled. In addition, Memphis had two players with the same number on the field during the play, which is a penalty. So the refs screwed that play up twice.

Well, 'possess' the ball is subjective, but I've seen many, many times where the punt team downs the ball by placing their hand on top of a ball lying on the ground. In fact it is rare where the ball is actually picked up or grabbed and handed to the official to declare 'possession'. Putting your hand on top of the resting ball has always been adequate to down the ball. And the ref actually agreed with that which is the reason he signaled the ball dead initially. It seemed to be only AFTER seeing the result of Memphis getting the 'trick' return that things became confused. Normal touching of a rolling ball on a punt play would not be possession but placing your hand on a resting ball has always been considered possessing in every game I've ever seen. Allowing that playground crap there to stand was a total joke.

So when the ref throws down his bean bag down...that doesn't signal the end of the play?
No. He’s marking the spot where the kick ended for his and the crew's reference. Not killing the play. (Note: the kick ending is not the same as the play ending.)

and waves his hands above his head that doesn't signal the play is dead?
Yes. See my response to Muttly. I believe under NCAA rules the waving of the arms should have been treated like a whistle.
When the ball is resting after a punt and is touched down by the punting team that doesn't end the play?
No. There is no such thing as a kick being "touched down." NCAA there is "illegal touching" which gives the receiving team certain options.

No idea if they got suspended, but I highly doubt it.

No. That is not the only way for a scrimmage kick play to end. The ball can be kicked out of bounds. The receiving team can possess the ball, run with it, and be tackled. Complete a fair catch. Be awarded a fair catch. The kicking team can possess the ball. The kick can come to rest and NO PLAYER MOVES TO POSSESS IT, and a number of other ways. I don't doubt you have watched what you think was the play being killed by someone touching the ball, but that is not what happened.

In this situation the ball came to rest, but someone DID move to possess it. The ref on the spot jumped the gun and waved his hands. He probably blew the whistle too, but they never said he did. That was the mistake.

Player possession is defined by rule:
a. Player Possession. The ball is in player possession when a player has the ball firmly in their grasp by holding or controlling it with hand(s) or arm(s) while contacting the ground inbounds.

I say no. Seen this movie too many times. Remember, SEC officials are the same bunch that allowed THIS crap to stand that could have cost Leach the HoF because he needed this win to have gone above the 50% threshold. This might be the most egregious SEC officiating call I've ever seen and the sad part was it was SEC officials screwing us against a NON-SEC team. The Bama game calls we've been hosed on like the Calvin Ridley running out of bounds and back in in 2017 to set up a TD have been widely discussed.

Need to make sure it's not up to the officiating crew. If it's close they won't allow it. State just needs to TCB and beat the shat out of 'em. yep

After two weeks of reading South Carolina and Missouri bitching about calls in those games, I can't believe you guys are setting up the narrative of an excuse if we lose. Man up!

Stopped reading after you said 'he's marking the spot where the kick ended'. Ridiculous, No ref waves his hands over this head during a play to 'mark a spot'. The rest wasn't even worth reading. I'm amazed at times how far supposed State fans will go to defend officiating. Anyone that has watched football for decades have seen punts allowed to be downed in that manner over and over. Only when something like that is allowed do people go try and pick apart the wording in the rule book. Anyone who thinks a return like that would have been allowed against Alabama is just stupid.

Also if I remember correctly, their coaching staff even came onto the field until he picked it up and started running. They had about 30 players on the field during the run back.

Almost every time, the player who downs the punt either picks it up or falls on it, which means he has possession. I don’t think I’ve hardly ever seen a guy just touch the ball and then walk away from it. In my football watching this weekend, I will see how many times the punting team player just touches the ball down and walks away, and then I will report back.

We're gonna get the 2001 BYU treatment if the game is close in the 2nd half. Expect a bunch of holding/pass interference calls coming our way if the game is close.
