Don't get into newer stuff, but I can give you two classics.

The Exorcist. I can't watch it again. I can't even know it's on tv or else I have to turn on all the lights inside the house.

Freaks (1932). Yeah I hear you? 1932? Circus freaks get their revenge on a circus strongman who killed one of the circus midgets, in cahoots with the midget's wife, the circus queen, to get his fortune. The circus freaks plot their revenge.

What makes it so scary if the director used real circus freaks. In the end, they all chase after the injured strongman to finish him off. There is something about a man with no arms and legs flopping through the mud with a knife clenched in his teeth that is quite unsettling. Got banned shortly after release - too many people got sick in the theaters. But its easily found now.

Anyone seen Fallen? Its one of the few Denzel movies that has escaped me. Looks good but can never find it streaming. Gandolfini in it too.
Love that movie. I think of it whenever I hear "Time is on my side" by the Rolling Stones. Just introduced my wife to it about a month ago. Can't remember which streaming platform it was. I just happened to see it, and immediately decided we were watching it.

Vampire new - Let the Right One In (Swedish)
Vampire old - Vampyr (1932)

If you're really into Vampireshit - Don't Miss these - Ganja & Hess, Blacula, and a Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. And, of course all the Hammer films with Lee and Cushing.

Basic Horror overall - The Exorcist

I know you said only one of each but I love horror and suspense movies so I’m gonna indulge myself. Number one down would be how I personally would rank them and if any were seen vs not seen and it were me looking, I’d go to the next one. I’m more of a fan to the classics so I put more detail on them.

Older (say pre 2000)
1. Exorcist-classic movie, wonderful cinematography, terrifying if you believe it could happen to you
2. Jaws-yeah I said it. Admittedly I had never seen the actual uncut edition of this until last year. My god, how this got a PG rating I’ll never know. And the behind the scenes legends of making this movie are awesome. Check them out of YouTube or podcast if that kind of thing interests you.
3. Scream-funny, scary at times, brutal kills, saved the slasher franchise from extinction
4. Halloween-just wrote the book on slasher movies. The angles used, the lighting, the premise of the movie, and Jamie Lee Curtis cemented herself in horror folklore with her performance.
5. Just for fun, Gremlins-funny, some jump scares, if you have a child you can watch it with them and they not have nightmares for a month, a fun movie that can make you flinch from time to time. Classic

Newer-I’ll qualify this list by saying I have not finished the remainder of the scream franchise so their may be one or more that should be here
1. Halloween 2018-fun, well made, carries the franchise back from the original (rob zombie stuff skipped over). A great restart and solid work by the cast
2. Send Help-this is a funny and fun damn movie. The acting by McAdams is great to me. Not brutal, more psychological to me. But a fun movie that can make you tense at times
3. Primate-wanna see a monkey destroy some humans. Watch this one. Yes there are some plot holes in it but I thoroughly enjoyed
4. IT chapter 1-awesome reboot of the original. Chapter 2 is hard to get through because of length but 1 is a great movie
5. Cabin in the woods-some hard kills, but a funny satire on the horror industry as a whole, and a fun movie. Can’t go wrong with this one

Haven't seen it in years, but I remember it being pretty good. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's got a good cliff hanger ending too

I don’t like gory movies and don’t typically watch horror movies, but Serpent and the Rainbow scared me when I was a kid in the 90’s. Stigmata is a vastly underrated movie with a really interesting plot.
I've seen a lot of the Saw and slasher stuff, but I'm not big on the senseless gore either. Stigmata is fantastic, and there's something about the whole horror/church crossover stories that I tend to like a lot too.

Never heard of Serpent and the Rainbow though, so I'll have to check that out

What’s one classic horror and one new(ish) horror movie that you consider must watch
The Strangers
From about 2008 with Liv Tyler.
Also, Shattered with Tom Beringer.
This one isn’t a horror movie but an edge of your seat thriller that makes your spine tingle

Some that come to mind:

Sinister is commonly listed as the scariest movie ever online, and I thought it was good but definitely not the scariest movie to me. I’m not sure anything will mess with me as much as Paranormal Activity did the first time I saw it.
Hereditary is the best slow burn horror you can find imo. It’s great.
I really enjoyed Obsession. Real creepy but fun.
I was underwhelmed by Backrooms somewhat. Very cool designs and idea, but it was just okay to me.

The original Halloween is the goat. The Exorcist is very good but it’s really not that scary compared to today’s standards.
