I thought of another one, can’t believe it didn’t cross my brain earlier.

I was in grad school at State in August 2015, sitting on the front patio of the Union with my now wife, when somebody walked up and yelled “there’s an active shooter at Carpenter Hall”. I look up and everyone around me starts sprinting. We ended up going inside to the third floor of the Union where there are some offices. I guess we figured we‘d be safer behind those locked doors than some of our other options at the time.

It ended up not ACTUALLY being an active shooter situation if I recall, I believe a guy called in a threat that he was about to do something but there were no shots fired and I don’t even think he had a weapon on him. But there was a lot of misinformation going on in real time that made it a lot scarier. Fake reports of students being dead on engineering row. It was terrifying in the moment. And then when they started to give the all clear and you saw people walking out of buildings, there was some construction work going on and people mistook the sound of a jackhammer for gun shots and started sprinting away again.

Scary scary hour or so on campus. And then I was back in class later that afternoon like nothing happened.

1. Uber was fairly new, I had never used it but had seen commercials about it. I was in a long line for a taxi in NY, guy pulls up near the end of the line in a nice Lincoln town car, steps out and asks if anyone needs an uber, holding a sign with the logo. Heck yeah, I ain’t waiting in line. I tell my wife to get in quick as the taxi dispatcher is hurrying our way and yelling to not get in, it’s not safe. I thought she was just mad to be losing business. As I sit down, he starts rolling. It is quickly apparent I had made a mistake. Inside of the car was falling apart, big difference than the outside of the vehicle. We made it to the destination. I threw him the agreed upon cash. We survived. Incredibly stupid decision on my part, very tense ride. Thank the Lord for protecting the dumb.

2. Boat ride in Alaska, weather turned nasty. The ocean is not the same up there.

Late 90's flight on Aeroflot from Moscow to St. Petersburg. The engine outside my window was being worked on by a mechanic, and we were delayed. Captain made an announcement 30 minutes after boarding (which I couldn't understand) and sound fairly calm. Another 30 minutes later Captain makes another announcement and sounds rather irritated. Shortly thereafter, he leaves the cockpit, hustles down the stairs and gets into an argument with the mechanic. They brawl, the pilot wins, closes the hatch on the engine, fires them up and we taxi for takeoff.

Solid hour and a half of prayer from me during the flight.

Atlanta during the time all those young Black guys were ending up dead in the Chattahoochee River. My ex-had to take a dump in the west side of the city, right then. I pulled off the Interstate to the nearest gas station. At the time, they suspected the Klan of committing all those murders and us with Mississippi car tags. Never been so nervous in my life as I waited for her to finish her business, and apparently she had a lot of business to take care of. I thought she was never coming out.🤣🤣🤣

I’ve had a couple walks through downtown Jackson or sketchy parts of Atlanta at night that were pretty bad, but scariest is probably when I was walking through Alaskan wilderness alone without a gun at 2am in July. It was roughly 50 miles from Fairbanks, so there was a little light but not much. The sky was dark purple. It was a short walk to the shack I was staying in for a few days but scared the **** out of me

The Natchez Trace in the 80's driving home from State. Hwy 25 wasn't what it is today, so the Trace was a viable route. That is unless you get caught in a tornado, couldn't see anything due to the torrential rains and the leaves and other debris being thrown about by the winds. Couldn't see to go forward and couldn't stop because there was no where to pull off. Found our later that some vehicles behind me had ran into tree's that had fallen across the road.

2nd was also in my college days and driving back to State this. Came upon several Highway Patrol cars on the side of the road, it was just about dusk and I eased through what I thought was a traffic accident. Well about a mile down the rode I see blue lights behind me and pull over. Trooper gets out, comes to the window and he was not happy. Begins to go off about how I almost ran over him, apparently it was a license check that I rolled through. Don't know how I survived this, but I apologized and explained to him that I didn't see him and that he should have had a flashlight or something in his hand. He stared and then smirked and said, you know, you are right. Thank goodness I had skipped my usual routine of a sixpack for the drive back, was probably a Sunday and wasn't being sold. Two telling signs signs in that story, yes I am old enough to where beer was not sold on Sundays and also DUI Laws were no where near what they are today.

I just remembered this place I lived once. I’d been there for months and had really gotten used to it. It was great. One of those all-inclusive places where everything was provided. You never even had to ask. Perfect temperature, great sounds, and you almost felt weightless.

Then one day, out of nowhere, this enormous blue, rubbery-looking thing grabbed me and started pulling me outside. Next thing I know I’m naked, freezing cold, surrounded by giant beings in a blindingly bright room. I could hardly breathe. Then the beating started. I literally cried.

Absolutely terrifying.
Been all downhill from there, right?

We got that text from our son that morning. We were on the road and had just pulled into the hotel the conference we were going to was at. There were several sets of parents glued to their phones in the lobby. We all started trading info.

I’m afraid of heights. I’m ok inside of something like an airplane or helicopter but outside is a different story. Our house was a one story but had a steep roof. I had a vent cover blow off and I had to replace it so I crawl up one ladder onto a low section of the roof and set up another ladder to get on the peak of the high section because there’s no way to stay on the steep angled sides. I’m walking the peak trying not to look down and vertigo sets in. My head starts spinning and I’m about to pass out. I quickly straddle the peak of the roof and lay down and pass smooth out. When I wake up my head is still spinning and fear has a grip on every muscle in my body, I’m virtually paralyzed and I’ve got to get down. It probably takes me an hour inching along the peak and another hour to get down the ladders. I never ridicule anyone with a phobia because until you’ve had fear that paralysis you then you haven’t really been scared.

1. Gulf of America on an oil rig in the late 90s. I noticed a bunch of giant bubbles coming up around the starboard side. We had been told to call the driller if we ever saw that. It could be gas escaping and we’d potentially be in for a massive explosion. We did have a leak and they were able to deal with it. We had chaos on deck when I made that call. People went running all over the damn place to get it shut down.

2. Also in the gulf on the way home on a chopper, we flew into a storm that had a large waterspout. The pilots didn’t see it until we were pretty close because the rain was heavy. When they banked sideways to get away from it, I just knew we were going for a drink. It was cool to see a waterspout from the cloud base looking down on it.
Are you a MSU petroleum geology grad? I seriously considered majoring in petroleum geology at MSU. BTW, anyone know if that curriculum is still offered?

Memphis after dark. The year was about 2011. Me and my buddy went to a Grizzlies game. After the game we went on Beale St. for a while got a little drunk. Went to the hotel, but wanted something to eat. The front desk guy told us a great place to eat. We walked there, and it was a bar that when we walked into that establishment, well the music pretty much stopped and everyone turned and looked at us. I might have to mention that we didn't have the same pigment as them. We made our exit pretty quickly. At that point we got lost for about 2 hours in Memphis..... Luckily we found a Denny's.... After eating we said we ain't walking back to our hotel. We called a cab and told the driver where we were staying. He began to look at us funny. We told him we had no idea where we were. He drove out of the Denny's parking lot. Took a left, then took another left into our hotel.

Not necessarily scary but one of the creepiest places I have experienced is/was the stacks in Mitchell Memorial Library at about 11 PM.

Scariest place I ever was: I was installing a computer network in a business in LA: exactly one week prior, the area behind that business was the exact location where the Rodney King police beating was filmed. The manager of that business was the guy who filmed it.

1) Getting lost in Tenton, NJ. Enough said.

2) Early 2000s on a flight from DWF to Phoenix during the Monsoon season, with a storm front approaching the airport. The pilot came on the intercom and said we would have a rough approach and for everyone to ensure their seatbelts were tightened. As we approached the runway, we were fluttering like a feather on the descent. As we approached the runway, I was looking out the window we hit a hard wind gust that suddenly dipped the wing as we were landing. I swear the right side wing was no more than 2 ft from hitting the runway. Luckily, the pilot made the necessary adjustments and we landed safely. At the time, I flew every week both domestically and internationally, and that's one of the only times I had a white-knuckle moment.

I did a touch and go in a commercial airliner, at night, in a pea soup fog because the pilot couldn’t see and overshot the runway. The go around was concerning to say the least.

Had a crappy job selling door to door in Memphis once upon a time and had to go walking into businesses on McLemore. Went into one and a group of about 5-6 dudes scrambled to hide **** when I walked in and weren’t happy that I was there. Black guy from the area that I was training let me know quickly that I needed to end my pitch and GTFO.

What’s the most scary place you’ve ever been?
Numerous Boy Scout campouts where I was told ghost stories, given the opportunity to hunt snipes (never found one), and then made to lay in a tent awake all night while all sorts of monsters, murderers, and man killing animals frolicked outside.

Does driving on high bridges over wide open expanses whether water or just openness also do that to you?

Opening day of turkey season this year, I pulled up to several blue lights on Hwy 17 near the entrance to my farm. Thought it was a license check. Nope. Car sitting in the middle of the road covered in a sheet. There had been a murder in the middle of the highway right at my farm. Going in the woods in the dark to hunt that morning was a bit eerie.
